A member of the public reports seeing the man in the photo below pick up his dog and throw him against a stone wall multiple times. The witness states he then pinned the dog to the ground and punched him repeatedly, while the woman with him stood by and watched.

According to the witness, this happened because the dog didn’t recall immediately and the man got his jeans wet retrieving him.

The last overseas shearers Britain intends to let in are on the fells right now, working out the final weeks of their leave.

The door shut on 30 June. No vote, no debate, no announcement, just a date passing quietly in a summer when everyone was looking elsewhere. Those still working the Borders this week are here on leave that expires on 1 October, and when they fly out that is the end of it.

Understand what is walking out.

Six New Zealanders spent three months in one Northumberland valley last year and sheared nearly 90,000 sheep. Fifteen thousand head each, across farms from the Scottish Borders down to County Durham. They have been coming into Coquetdale for over thirty years. Since 2011 a concession has let up to 75 of them in each spring, and between them they take the wool off one and a half to two million British sheep in a window a few weeks long.

The Home Office rejected the application on 2 February. Twenty-six days of farmers writing to their MPs got it reinstated on 10 March for one final year, with a line about the sector having had fourteen years to train British workers and now being expected to transition to domestic labour.

Here is what that sentence is standing on. British Wool trains over 800 people a year, most of those courses are basic level, and most of the people on them are sheep farmers learning to do their own flock. Training was never the bottleneck. A top shearer clears a ewe in two or three minutes, calm hands, no panic in the animal, hundreds a day for weeks on end, and reaching that standard takes years of conditioning and a place in a global trade that follows the season around the planet.

Fourteen million breeding ewes. A few weeks to do them all. A sheep left in fleece gets eaten alive by maggots, so the job is not optional and the date is not negotiable.

Next spring those farms make phone calls that nobody answers.

Seventy-five shearers, once a year, and a government that could not find room for them.

We called on the U.S. Department of Justice to hand over the full Epstein files to the UN Special Rapporteurs and UN independent committees for investigations, as this is an international case of crimes against humanity. But the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN's top human rights official didn't even care to open an investigation or listen to our call for the DoJ, nor utter a single word regarding the largest human trafficking network in modern history.

Let's talk numbers, because Essex Partnership University Trust @EPUTNHS cannot count its own dead.

In 2021 they told the inquiry 1,500 mental health patients had died in their care. Two years later they quietly added another 500 to the pile, almost as a footnote. Counting bodies turned out to be harder than counting quarterly targets.

The Lampard Inquiry @LampardInquiry is now investigating more than 2,000 deaths of mental health inpatients in Essex between 2000 and 2023. That works out to roughly 1 death every 4 days for 24 years straight.

None of this happened because anyone in charge felt like doing the right thing. Melanie Leahy @MelanieLeahy fought for 14 years after her son Matthew died at the Linden Centre. She got 100,000 people to sign a petition in 2020 just to force a debate in Parliament.

The first version of this inquiry launched in 2021 with no legal power at all. Staff were invited to give evidence, not compelled. Out of 14,000 staff, 11 showed up.

Eleven. You could fit them in a minibus with room to spare.

Only after that humiliation did the government finally grant statutory powers in 2023, letting the inquiry compel witnesses. Baroness Kate Lampard took over as chair. She previously led the @NHS investigation into Jimmy Savile. Think about what that says about the company Essex mental health services now keep.

@EPUTNHS is forecasting a 30 million pound bill defending itself at an inquiry into itself. Money that should have gone into keeping patients alive is going into lawyers explaining why it did not.

Meanwhile Paul Scott, the chief executive who publicly disputed the 2,000 figure, left EPUT this year for the top job at East Suffolk and North Essex Trust @ESNEFT. Up and out, while the inquiry he argued with keeps grinding on without him.

New patient deaths were reported in 2024 and again in April 2025, while the inquiry into the old ones was still sitting in session. The final report is not due until 2027.

Bereaved families have compared their treatment to the Hillsborough families. Watching this timeline, it is hard to tell them they are wrong.

WHERE'S MY DAVIE?

A few weeks ago, a follower of mine, David Porter, asked if I'd look at his case. He sent me a huge stack of files, 21 documents in total, built up over two and a half years of dealing with the police and their watchdog. I've now read every page. I'll be honest, it shook me.

David had been part of a little girl's life since she was born. He was there in the hospital when she arrived. For years he was her official carer, and later, when her mum was struggling again, he simply stepped back in and looked after her, no fuss, because that's what he does for a living too, helping people who need it.

Anyone who's ever loved a child that isn't biologically theirs will recognise what that bond looks like.

In December 2023, a group of people came to his home one night and demanded the little girl, then three, be handed over.

David called the police while he was being attacked, trying to keep her safe. When officers arrived, they decided she should go and live with a man Social Work already had years of paperwork on, a man known for drinking heavily and turning violent, who had assaulted David himself once before.

Within a day, the little girl was found injured, and she was taken into foster care. She hasn't been allowed to see David since.

Her mum's brother drove over from Dundee more than once, just hoping to see her. He was turned away. Her aunt, who is an approved foster carer herself, offered to take her in so she wouldn't lose everyone she knew at once. She was refused too.

Social workers later noted, in their own writing, that the little girl might need to see a child psychologist because of what all this isolation was doing to her. And months after she was taken, a family friend ran into her by chance in town.

The first thing she said was, "where's my Davie?"

That part of the story isn't in dispute. What happened after is why I'm writing this.

David complained to the police about how that night was handled. It took them almost a year just to agree on what his complaint actually said, and along the way they kept refusing to answer the most basic questions, hiding behind data protection rules. Was the child hurt? Had anyone actually checked whether the man they handed her to was safe? Nobody would say.

Meanwhile, in public, the little girl's mother stood outside David's home and screamed that he was a paedophile, that her daughter had been abused by him. Strangers heard it. It's the kind of accusation that can end a career overnight, especially for a man whose entire job is working with vulnerable children and adults.

David was never once arrested, questioned, or even spoken to about it. But nearly two years later, completely by chance, while dealing with an unrelated licence matter, he discovered the police had quietly written that exact allegation into their own internal system days after it was made, and had recorded him by name as the child's main carer. His own complaints department, the people meant to be investigating how it was handled, didn't even know the record existed. He had to help them find it.

There's more. David went to a police station twice in person to raise his concerns and was told someone would call him back. Nobody did, and the police later insisted they had no record he'd ever been in. He only proved it happened because he'd filmed himself there on his phone.

When police finally tried to work out which staff member he'd spoken to, they named someone who didn't even remotely match the person on his video, wrong age, wrong description entirely. And that person, conveniently, was away and couldn't be asked about it, so the trail just went cold.

By David's own reckoning, this has cost him hundreds of hours and a fair amount of his own money, on top of everything else, just trying to get straight answers about a 3 year old he loved and raised.

2.5 years after that night, the police finally sent their last word on the matter. A couple of the failures were admitted, but all that came of it was a note in a training file. One complaint that had already been upheld simply vanished from the final letter, with no explanation given. And several separate issues that the watchdog had specifically ordered the police to look into properly were never dealt with at all.

I don't think anyone set out to hurt this little girl on purpose. People make mistakes under pressure. What stays with me is everything that came after:

years of silence, a missing police record, a wrongly named colleague, a complaint that disappeared, a man's reputation left hanging for two years over something the police themselves knew wasn't true, and a family still waiting for someone to simply say what happened and why.

The little girl is safe now. But the questions about how she ended up hurt, and who was ever actually held responsible for it, are still open.
