While visiting VukuZenzele Co-operative in Zvishavane, I noticed this maize storage design. The "granary" is raised off the ground, but what really caught my attention were the cone-shaped metal guards fitted around each supporting pole.
These metal cones act as rat guards. Rats can easily climb vertical poles, but when they reach the smooth, flared metal cone, they can't get past it to reach the maize. It's a chemical-free solution that protects the harvest from rats while allowing good airflow around the stored cobs.
Sadly we had a major breakdown of pumps at Ncema which has affected our ability to supply water. Our engineers are working as hard as they can to restore services.
