Landsat 9 captured very clear images of the Himalayan glacier that collapsed, triggering the catastrophic flash floods in Nepal.

Estimating very roughly from these images, it appears that the area that failed may have spanned ~1 km² of ice and rock.

Radar shows what looks like steady rainfall at first. But the air close to the ground is so dry that Fresno has only recorded a trace so far.

We'll see something similar in the Sacramento Valley tomorrow.

Rain will accumulate a little better in the Sierra.

The Timber Fire is taking off in Monterey County.

This fire started almost 3 weeks ago, but recently a deep marine layer had kept the fire activity relatively light. No clouds today = faster warming and more instability. That all points to more intense burning and lots of smoke

The sudden flood devastated areas around Timure and Syabrubesi, destroying roads, bridges, homes, markets and hydropower infrastructure. At least eight people were reported killed, while around 400 tourists became unreachable as rescue efforts were hampered by damaged infrastructure.

Nepalese authorities suspect a glacial lake outburst flood from Tibet rather than heavy rainfall, as only minimal rain had fallen in the area before the disaster.

Despite low containment numbers, the #HawkFire is pretty much out, and the parts that were closest to neighborhoods haven’t spread for over 24 hours. Meanwhile, national news is reporting breathlessly that Reno is in great peril. #DoBetter
