Too late Fr. Bobby Yap. You should’ve done this at the latest, one day after the incident. Now the hate train on Ateneo has gone out of control and it’s your fault.
“I remember a time when a school immediately took action dahil lang mamantika daw ang almusal ng mga player. Anyare?”
Sports broadcaster and former athlete Mikee “Tito Mikee” Reyes drew mixed reactions online after posting this cryptic message, seemingly referencing the recent tragedy involving Ateneo basketball players Rene Baterbonia, 19, and Divine Adili, 21, who died during a team-building activity.
Many netizens interpreted the post as a comparison to the 2020 controversy involving the UST Growling Tigers’ unauthorized training camp in Sorsogon, which led to major administrative and roster changes within the program, including the resignation of head coach Aldin Ayo.
Others linked Reyes’ remarks to ongoing discussions surrounding institutional accountability and athlete welfare.
The post also drew criticism from social media users who felt that public comparisons should be handled with caution, as the families, teammates, and community affected by the tragedy are still grieving. Some questioned whether the discussion was premature, while others accused Reyes of inserting himself into a sensitive situation.
At the same time, several supporters defended the broadcaster, arguing that conversations about accountability, safety protocols, and institutional response are valid and can coexist with expressions of sympathy and respect for those mourning.
As discussions continue online, many have called for a balanced approach—one that prioritizes compassion while allowing space for questions that may help prevent similar incidents in the future.
For now, the focus remains on honoring the lives lost and supporting those affected, even as broader conversations unfold in the public sphere.
Earlier, Reyes also cautioned social media users against turning tragedies into content. “Hindi lahat ng bagay kailangan gawan ng content. Hindi lahat ng bagay kailangan ng reaction video. Hindi lahat ng bagay kailangan gatasin,” he wrote in a June 9 Facebook post, without specifying a particular incident.
His remarks came shortly after two widely reported events: a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao and the drowning deaths of Baterbonia and Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. According to police, the two were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters while swimming. Investigations remain ongoing.

HENSON: UAAP IS VERY INSENSITIVE ON BATERBONIA, ADILI ISSUE
"The Dean" Quinito Henson raised concerns over the responses of both the UAAP and Ateneo following the drowning deaths of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Henson questioned the move to place head coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo on leave, and challenged the UAAP's early pronouncement that neither Ateneo nor Baldwin would face suspension despite ongoing questions surrounding the incident.
