The podcast that Keith Pelley has done with Bunkered is quite something:

“I also get amused with the lazy narrative, and not factually based, that people talk about the DP World not being in a strong position. And I don’t know where that comes from, because I don’t think we’ve ever been in a stronger position.”

NEVER BEEN IN A STRONGER POSITION.

Just take a moment to digest that. I find it not only delusional but also completely disrespectful to the legends that supported the tour during its peak. It was literally a rival to the PGA Tour for decades, with our top players all playing at home, in star-studded events, throughout the summer. But now:

• Spectator numbers are clearly down
• There’s been regular events that are getting zero TV coverage in the UK
• Members playing full time in Europe are struggling to get clothing/sponsorship deals
• Top players only play the Scottish and massive purse, end of season events
• It appears that next year, the legacy events will be condensed into 3 months between September - November to not clash with the PGA Tours ‘designated events’ through the summer
• Members playing full time in Europe won’t get starts in the top PGA Tour events from next season
• OWGR points have fallen so it’s impossible for members playing full time in Europe to get into the top 50 and access majors
• The 10 best players are being lost to the PGA Tour EVERY SINGLE YEAR
• The Asian Tour is hosting 2 events in the UK during the peak summer months with Ryder Cup legends playing
• European Ryder Cup legends are now banned from being captains
• It’s officially become a feeder tour or as Keith Pelley calls it “a pathway to the PGA Tour”

Along with all this, Keith Pelley has talked about sanctions for players playing on the Asian Tour now too. This means that not only are top players going to be effectively forced to choose between the DP World Tour and LIV, but also the middle ranked guys will have to choose between the DP World Tour and the Asian Tour, further weakening the strength of fields.

Imo, this is going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy and the European Tour board need to start making decisions and working in the best interests of its own members, fans and sponsors because at the moment, it’s pretty obvious that they’re doing everything possible to please Ponte Vedra Beach.

I just hope the finances are as flush as he says they are because the tour is going to need it with the way this is trending.

@astonmead Ultimately this will simply lead to more SME’s having to submit viability assessments to prove that 50% affordable housing provision on sites that are under say 150 units simply wouldn’t work. Rising build costs/the cost of the land itself delivering 30-40% ha is already tricky.
