Don’t overcomplicate life. Be in the present moment and take control of the things you can such as your attitude, effort, self-talk, self-discipline, and your coach-ability. It’s amazing how things come together when you keep your life as simple as possible.
Billy Donovan
“When I look at the best teams I’ve coached, the first thing that comes to mind is an enormous amount of love, care, & acceptance for each other. That comes from being unselfish.”

Perseverance & adversity go hand in hand. You persevere by: 1) looking at adversity as an opportunity to learn; 2) keeping things in perspective; and 3) responding with poise, confidence, & toughness. Your level of success is determined by the level of your perseverance & grit.

Today, our nation honors our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. During my 12 years at West Point, I worked with & learned from some of the most outstanding people that I have ever met. They were brave, selfless, caring & humble. I think of them daily.
Your talent opens the door for success but it is only an indicator. Your motivation determines what you do. Your work ethic, attitude, and grit determines how well you do it.
Players: An important question to ask yourself is.... Am I a better player today than I was yesterday. Coaches: An important question to ask yourself is...Am I a better coach today than I was yesterday. Everyone on a team must improve every day for greatness to occur.
Athletes.... Be thankful for the people in your lives that care about you and push you out of your comfort zone in order for you to grow and perform at your best. Every one needs to be stretched.
High performers have great self-awareness and situational awareness. They have the ability to accurately see and feel a situation. They focus on what needs to be done. They see and make choices that generate and elevate the mindset and energy necessary to succeed.
The ultimate deciding factor in playoff games in any sport is THE MENTAL GAME. Physical talent can get a team into postseason play, but it’s their mental toughness and resilience that is the difference. Great coaches prepare players all season to have a “playoff mentality.”
High performers win in their minds first. Through their unwavering commitment & mental toughness, they know they have paid the price for greatness. Their deep belief in themselves and their teammates enables them to perform at their best & bounce back quickly from adversity.
Your habits determine your level of success. Athletes that improve the most consistently push themselves out of their comfort zone. They do more than what is required. It’s the extra rep, one more sprint, etc. that makes the difference. Make it a habit to always exceed the standard rather than just meeting the standard.
