In sport, losing should never be beneficial. But with the EHF’s poorly thought-out rules for next season’s Champions League, that is exactly the situation THW Kiel are facing ahead of tomorrow’s Bundesliga match at home against Füchse Berlin.

THW Kiel can no longer qualify for the Champions League through the Bundesliga, as 2nd place is out of reach. Their final chance is by winning the European League title.

But even if Kiel win the European League, the Champions League winner must either come from another country - or finish in the top 2 of their domestic league.

If the realistic scenario happens where Füchse Berlin win the Champions League but finish 3rd in the Bundesliga, then Kiel (as well as MT Melsungen) cannot qualify for the Champions League even if they win the European League.

That means THW Kiel actually have an incentive to lose against Berlin tomorrow.

The same could apply to Melsungen (who face Berlin on June 4).

A stupid structure - and one that could have major consequences for SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

- Chose handball at the age of 20
- Was relegated from the Danish league with Randers HH in 2017
- Played for West Wien in the Austriab League from 2017 to 2019
- Joined the Bundesliga side Leipzig in 2019
- After a few months, he moved on loan to league rivals Wetzlar
- Made his debut for the Icelandic national team the same year and was selected for the EHF Euros 2020
- Participated in the semifinals of the EHF Euros 2026
