New theory: the older you get, the more you're expected to be an expert/manager/boss, the more important it is to be a beginner at something. A hobby allows you to find the joy in being bad at something, to laugh at yourself. It's part of the cure for anxiety/perfectionism/stress
High five to @annehelen and @MelodyRowell for an amazing wrap to the Work Appropriate podcast. Looking forward to their next endeavor, and have learned so much from all the on-point org psychology advice. Cheers!
Legit concerned that the proliferation of travel sports teams/professionalization of kid sports destroys kids' empathy by placing them in hyper-competitive us/them situations.
Y'all, please hug every kid who feels like they're too much, which seems like a lot of them rn. Too loud, too wiggly, too opinionated, too active, too curious, too quiet, too bookish, too distractible, too, too, too.
I'd choose a passionate person over an apathetic one any day.
@missmulrooney The worst. I'm embarrassed to tell you how long it took hubs and I (both of whom have grad degrees) to figure out multi-digit multiplication. π± Just know you're in good company.
@JulieCalidonio The whole skills section of LinkedIn feels like such BS to me, regardless of your background. (1) other than copying keywords from the job post, I now need ESP to figure out which ones the recruiter is using; (2) the keywords change depending upon the job.
@jbharrisbooks@PublishingRodeo had a great podcast this week w/@gailcarriger on this topic. Spoiler alert: Twitter/X was not helpful for discoverability, other than potentially building community w/other authors.
Loved @KJezerMorton's latest Brooding piece re being on call for our kids, and have two thoughts: (1) I'd be pissed about kids interrupting my workout, but mine like to find me in the shower (π±); (2) this is an argument for big families
PSA from teaching creative writing to 10 year olds: the kids are hungry for time during the school day to just be. To dream, even. They don't get it at lunch (too loud), they don't get it at recess (too social), and everything else (PE/art/music if they exist) is so structured.
Sweet hubs went to library to pick up research books. Librarian was super excited to nerd out with him on the topic. He played along until the trivia he's picked up by osmosis wore off and he finally had to admit these books were for his wife. π€£
