That is usually spoken by people who do not fully appreciate the level of game intelligence he is operating at.

Lionel Messi is not just walking back.

Watch closely in the next Argentina game you see. Messi often allows defenders to stay in front of him on purpose. This is called positioning on the blind side.

From behind defenders, Messi can see almost every outfielder in the picture. He can see the spaces across the opposition backline to drop into, but more importantly, he can see the exact moment when his teammates have enough time and space on the ball to play a forward pass.

That is when Messi comes alive.

He quickly drops into spaces across the opposition backline. First, he offers an arched run to go beyond if the pass is on. If the defenders drop off to cover that run, he then changes direction and receives the ball to feet between the lines.

Messi is not a big, physical player who can hold the ball up or dominate aerial duels. So over the years, he has cleverly adapted the way he links play.

This is just one part of his game that is massively misunderstood by many.

You see this more and more in modern football, players are coached to focus so heavily on blocking runs, screening opponents and making contact that they stop doing the most basic thing, watching the ball.

It cost Uruguay badly there.

Horrible defending. And just because something happens at the highest level doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be called out.

Your body position has to be open enough that you can quickly check both the ball and your opponent. You simply cannot lose sight of the flight of the ball in those moments.

Any set piece coach encouraging players to defend without seeing the ball is preaching shocking defending.

Any kids watching that goal, that is not how you defend a set piece.
