New research from Kellogg Faculty Fellow Katie Jarvis in The Journal of Modern History examines how ordinary Parisians used revolutionary local courts to reshape everyday credit practices.
In “How Parisians Transformed Popular Credit at the Revolutionary Justice of the Peace: A Hidden Groundwork of Nineteenth-Century Capitalism in France?,” Jarvis analyzes 174 contentious cases involving 354 court-goers in the Parisian section of les Arcis in 1792.
Her findings reveal how working people used the new justice of the peace system to distinguish consumer debts from personal debts, transform rent repayment practices, and help establish credit norms that may have shaped nineteenth-century capitalism in France.
