A8: The most essential of the “Nineteen Things That Matter Most” to me as an art teacher is #19. "Great teachers care about their students. They understand that behaviors & beliefs are tied to emotion, & they understand the power of emotion to jump-start change."#VCSGreatTeachers
A7: It's cool to listen, it's cool to praise each other, it's cool to learn. Establishing this mindset is important at the beginning of the year. I establish this with a "mantra" students repeat daily. #VCSGreatTeachers
A6: Noticing student growth is important when it comes to standardized testing. Focusing on the whole child and their needs is is crucial #VCSGreatTeachers
A5: I love getting feedback from other art teachers & wish we had the opportunity to observe each other. I was honored when an art T from another state visited my classroom while on family vacation. It made me realize that specials don’t get the opportunity #VCSGreatTeachers
A4: People skills aren't in textbooks. I love my job specifically because I have the freedom to teach people skills through creating and create upon teachable moments! #VCSGreatTeachers
A3: This school year, I want to utilize a website/app called Artsonia to connect with students and parents more frequently/individually. Right now, I am connecting with only about 50% of our families on Artsonia. I hope to engage closer to 100% this year #VCSGreatTeachers
A2: Basing your decisions on the best people sets yourself up for the best outcomes. When a school has the best teachers, it can be the best! #VCSGreatTeachers
A1: Kelsi Quicksall, Beachside Elementary. Looking forward to our 1st full school year on our new campus! Last year was hectic with many changes. Looking forward to finally having time to organize my new space and plan for a new school year! #VCSGreatTeachers
A8: I always have a plan and purpose for our art lessons- but this year I want to be even more intentional about creating lessons that allow for student personalization and expression. #VCSGreatTeachers
A6: I think sharing what teachers do on social media is important to shed light on how many hats we wear and how well we wear them! Celebrate and share our students’ success! #VCSGreatTeachers
A4: Authentic & specific praise is key when it comes to art, but challenging to do privately. On big projects, I write feedback on sticky notes. It’s challenging not to use broad praise like “I love it!”- I want students to be proud of and approve their own work #VCSGreatTeachers
A3: A supportive team to vent/ relate to is necessary for mental health! After venting to my husband, he said “if you hate it, why don’t you do something else?” That was a wake up call-I LOVE my job! Right people to vent to is key or may be heard as complaining. #VCSGreatTeachers
A2: Instead of resisting change, teachers need to embrace it and focus on the students and how to make it as seamless as possible for them. #VCSGreatTeachers
A1: Kelsi Quicksall, Beachside. "Better late than never" is going to be my quote since I missed 2 chats and am playing catch up! Going way back to July 12th, chapters 10-15…so sorry! #VCSGreatTeachers
A8: I know I personally get caught up in my own curriculum and often forget to ask colleagues how I can help and support theirs. I am open to collaborating to create lessons that support & engage Ss in learning by making cross curricular connections #VCSGreatTeachers
