Can you connect the dots yet?

Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are allies.

They want to upend the Western-led order.

And their conflicts are becoming increasingly tangled.

Iran supplies drones to Russia to attack Ukraine. Ukraine risks getting dragged into the war against Iran, because it just bombed an Iranian cargo vessel shipping weapons to Russia. Now Iran is threatening to get involved in the war against Ukraine, saying that Ukraine's actions "cannot go unanswered." While for now the Iranians accept the Ukrainians' excuse that it was unintentional, let's see whether Ukraine continues to allow weapons shipments across the Caspian Sea.

Meanwhile, North Korea is supplying troops to Russia to attack Ukraine. Ukraine believes Moscow is preparing to deploy another 30,000 North Korean troops to fight its bloody war in Europe.

At the same time, China is providing Russia with technologies that support its war on Ukraine, inviting Western sanctions.

So we've got a war against Ukraine with North Korean troops possibly using Iranian drones and Chinese technology at the behest of Russia.

In return, Russia is also getting involved in these countries' conflicts. For one, it's helping Iran fight the United States and its Middle Eastern allies.

Russia reportedly gave Iran intelligence to target American forces, specifically the movement of US warships and military assets, as well as Israeli energy infrastructure. The FT reports Iran has improved its missile targeting thanks to more intelligence from Russia. Russia is also selling thousands of advanced shoulder-fired missiles to Iran.

China is also helping Iran. The US sanctioned a Chinese satellite company for providing intelligence to the Houthis to target US warships. China reportedly reached some sort of deal with the Houthis to leave its own ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. China was of course the major buyer of Iranian oil, giving it cash to fund its proxy armies as it built its own reserves.

Meanwhile, Russia and North Korea have a mutual defense pact since 2024, and Russia is helping arm North Korea. Russia has held joint naval drills with China, which is plotting a takeover of Taiwan.

This axis is not alone, and the West needs to question what side certain states are on. Turkey, of course, is a Trojan horse in NATO that operates Russian air defenses. Turkey has growing military ties with Pakistan, which is an ally of Iran. South Africa has conducted naval exercises with Russia and China, and it's openly allied with Iran.

In short, the aggression against Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and South Korea cannot be treated as isolated conflicts. They are increasingly interlinked and threaten to become enmeshed even more messily.

When Shabbat went out on Saturday night, I turned on my phone and found what everyone else in Israeli media found: Ro Khanna, a congressman from California, telling two million people that Israeli settlers with American-made M4s detained him in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), and that when the IDF showed up, the soldiers sided with the settlers and kept him there.
My first reaction was anger at the men who blocked that road. It still is.
Something did happen on Wednesday near Khirbet Zanuta. Armed young men surrounded a minibus carrying a sitting member of Congress, kicked its tires, cursed at the passengers, filmed them and laughed at them, and kept the road blocked for over an hour while a New York Times photographer sat inside watching. The same week, four suspects were arrested for attacking a CNN crew near Sinjil with clubs. I have no idea who these men think they're protecting. They handed Israel's harshest critics a gift no BDS campaign could have bought, the IDF itself called the blocking unlawful, and the only serious response is to prosecute them.
So why am I writing this column? Because I spent Saturday night reading everything published on this story, in English and in Hebrew, and the version Khanna is telling America has grown in the telling.
He told Reuters, twice in one sentence, that the men had machine guns. The M4 is a carbine. A small thing, maybe, from a politician who demands precision about every bomb Israel drops. The bigger problem is that the IDF statement says it is reviewing the identity of "the armed individual." Singular. The army's account has one armed man. His tweet has settlers, plural, brandishing rifles. Somebody's description is wrong, and it can be checked.
Then there's the ending, or rather the endings. His tweet says the IDF continued his detention. His own aide told reporters they were released when officers showed up. Khanna told CNN they were freed after the embassy reached a senior Israeli official. Haaretz reported it was the Foreign Ministry. The army says its troops cleared the road. I've read four accounts of how this ended, and Israelis get him out in all of them.
By Saturday night, an American news headline said he was detained by the IDF, and the men who actually blocked the road had disappeared from the story.
There's also a question nobody in the American coverage has pressed. Khanna says the Israeli government was notified of his trip. An Israeli security source says the visit was never coordinated, which is why he had no security. Those are two different claims.
Remember, this was a tour of Judea and Samaria exclusively, with programming built entirely by Palestinian hosts, by a man who declared before boarding the van that anyone unwilling to say "genocide" and "apartheid" is morally compromised, three weeks after signing a pledge committing him to those exact positions, and who told the Times it is not a good idea to detain long-shot presidential candidates. He knows what Wednesday is worth to him.
Khanna says we'll be hearing more soon. I hope some of it happens here. The Jerusalem Post studio is open to him, on the record, for as long as he wants, with the IDF statement and his own timeline on the table. He came for an unfiltered look at us. When we’re arguing about I.C.E., we’re not actually arguing about immigration policy. We’re arguing about legitimacy. And we’re doing it while watching two completely different movies…

I spent the last week really listening to the voices on all sides of this conflict. ICE agents. Protesters. Conservatives. Progressives. Undocumented families. Police Officers. Gov’t officials. Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Each side thinks it is the reasonable one. Each side thinks the other side is lying or insane. And each side—at SOME level—actually has a point.

Conservatives see law enforcement under attack. Progressives see unchecked federal power running roughshod over neighborhoods. Same events. Totally different data sets and frameworks.

This outcome isn’t by accident. Algorithms are feeding us different videos, headlines and emotional cues. Again: we are not watching the same movie!

From inside the conservative worldview: If enforcement fails, we lose the country. Blocking ICE looks like blocking firefighters.

From inside the progressive worldview: If ICE overreach isn’t resisted now, authoritarianism becomes normal. NOT protesting feels like surrendering democracy.

Neither side is pretending. Both are reacting to real fears. But both are missing critical parts of the picture. Here’s a test of good faith when discussing the I.C.E. issue: Can you name the other side’s deepest fear in a way they’d agree is fair? Drop your best shot in the comments below.

We can have constitutional enforcement and legitimate protest. Safety and freedom. But not if we keep letting social media trick us into believing the absolute worst about everyone who disagrees with us.

There is a revealing silence echoing across the West. Not the silence of ignorance, but the silence of choice. In Iran, people are on the streets demanding freedom. The regime has responded by cutting the internet, clearing the stage, and preparing the ground for bloodshed. This is how the Islamic Republic kills without witnesses. We have seen it before. We know exactly what comes next. And yet the Western Left, so vocal on every other injustice, has very little to say.

The Iranian state has not merely censored dissent; it has switched off the lights. An internet blackout is not crowd control. It is premeditation. In 2019, the same tactic preceded the killing of around 1,500 people. Today, with protests spreading across more than a hundred cities, the pattern is repeating under the rule of Ali Khamenei. Tear gas, live rounds, mass arrests. Children dead. Morgues filling. Silence abroad.

What makes the silence damning is that nothing here is unclear. The protesters are not chanting borrowed slogans or calling for "dialogue" with their jailers. They chant against the dictator. They tear down regime symbols. They want the end of a theocracy that beats women, jails opponents, and exports terror. They want freedom, plainly and without disguise.

That should trigger outrage. It does not. Instead, we hear the familiar hedging language. Calls for "restraint". Appeals for "engagement". Statements so bloodless they could be drafted by the regime itself. The same voices that erupt over statues in Bristol and police tactics in Paris are suddenly cautious when a clerical dictatorship prepares to shoot its own people in the dark.

The reason is not confusion. It is alignment. The modern Left rations outrage according to ideology. When protests are directed against the West or its allies, they are hailed as the voice of the people. When protests are directed against regimes that define themselves in opposition to the West, the moral energy drains away. Iran is anti-American, anti-Israel, and loudly hostile to Western power. That places it on the protected side of the ledger.

This is the moral inversion at work. Brutality is not condemned on its own terms. It is weighed against who benefits. If tyranny weakens the West, it is indulged. If resistance strengthens the values the West claims to believe in, it is ignored.

Watch the contrast. Every move by Donald Trump is interrogated to the bone. Every Israeli action is parsed, moralised, and condemned. Yet as Iran prepares a massacre behind a digital curtain, the same critics fall quiet. The standard does not wobble; it disappears.

This is why the internet blackout matters. It is not a technical detail. It is the signal that the regime is about to act without witnesses. And the absence of Western pressure, media saturation, and moral insistence tells Tehran that it can proceed with minimal cost.

The Left likes to present itself as the conscience of the age. Iran exposes the fraud. This is not a politics of people, but of narratives. Suffering matters only when it can be used against the West. When it cannot, it is filed away under "complexity" and forgotten.

The protesters in Iran are not asking for Western retreat. They are asking for Western civilisation to mean something again: liberty, dignity, law, the right to live without fear of the state. That makes them inconvenient. Their courage exposes the hollowness of a human-rights culture that speaks loudly only when it's safe to do so.

History will record who spoke and who stayed quiet while the lights went out. Tyranny thrives on that quiet. And every time the Left chooses silence over solidarity with those fighting for freedom, it teaches dictators the same lesson: kill quickly, kill unseen, and the noise will fade. That is the cost of moral inversion. And Iran is paying it in blood.
