Can Ruto Win 2027 Without Mt. Kenya? Lessons from Ol Kalou

After Ol Kalou voters delivered a resounding rebuke to President Ruto’s UDA in the by-election, one question now dominates the national conversation.

Can Ruto win 2027 without Mt. Kenya?

I spoke to several analysts and political observers to understand what this result really means.

Their verdict was clear: goodwill and trust cannot be bought with projects or handouts. The voter is king.

Drawing lessons from how former President Moi navigated similar rejection in Mt. Kenya, the path ahead for Ruto looks narrower than many assume.

Rebuilding fractured alliances, managing coalitions, and regaining emotional connection with key voting blocs will be critical.

The Ol Kalou outcome is more than a by-election result. It is a signal.

What does this mean for 2027? And can any leader afford to ignore Mt. Kenya’s political weight?

A possible constitutional collision, or collusion?

So, next week, Sept. 1, #Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema is set to be sworn in for a second term.

Yesterday, Zambia’s Chief Justice, Dr. Mumba Malila, said he had received an electronic copy of “the people’s presidential petition” at his private email address.

The petition challenged the Aug. 13 election result.

The courts had been closed indefinitely. Opposition lawyers could not access the official registry. They sent the petition to the Chief Justice instead.

Dr. Malila called the filing “highly irregular.” But he acknowledged receipt and referred it to the Constitutional Court.

An hour later, the state said President-elect swearing-in would proceed, stating that no petition had been filed within the seven-day legal deadline.

The contradiction is difficult to overlook.

Can a constitutional right to challenge an election be defeated by the closure of the very courts meant to receive the petition?

If the state prevents access to the courts, can it then argue that no petition was filed because the deadline expired?

If the Chief Justice received the petition and referred it to the Constitutional Court, on what basis can another arm of government declare that no petition exists?

KCB Bank (@KCBInKenya) has sought intervention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation's Banking Fraud Investigations Unit over the alleged €978,675,835 (Kes 147.86 billion) remittance into Foxcapital Investment Ltd account at the bank.

KCB Bank makes the following points in its letter to the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit:

· It denies that the alleged funds were transmitted to, received by or held by the Bank

· It states that preliminary investigation has found no evidence that the alleged remittance was ever processed by UBS Switzerland AG or held, received or recorded in KCB's operational records, transaction systems or SWIFT infrastructure

· On 13th August 2026, KCB wrote to UBS Switzerland AG forwarding the documents produced by Foxcapital & requesting confirmation of the legitimacy of the alleged remittance of €978,675,835 (Kes 147.86 billion) from UBS Switzerland AG to KCB

· KCB states that the response from an executive attached to UBS Switzerland AG indicated that the documents were not originated by UBS Switzerland AG and were are therefore not genuine

· KCB further states that UBS Switzerland AG did not authenticate the alleged SWIFT messages, payment
instruction, payment tracking documents or transaction documents that were forwarded to it for review

· KCB's Head, Compliance & Ethics, has denied authoring, preparing, approving, signing or transmitting the said P1 Incident Report dated 17th April 2026 produced as exhibit "DDA 15" in a sworn affidavit. He has also denied communicating to Foxcapital or its representatives the matters stated in that document

· KCB's AML Manager, Compliance and Ethics Department, has denied under oath that she authored, prepared or signed the alleged Financial
Crime Review &* AML/CFT Clearance dated 18th May 2026 produced as exhibit "DDA 16"

As a young, poor boy in Riruta Satellite, I used to sit outside the wooden shack that was home to me, my amazing parents and lovely siblings. I used to stare at the sky and watch planes flying overhead.

One day, something stirred inside my nine-year-old skinny frame, and I wanted to fly one day - not as a passenger but as a pilot. God must have heard my thoughts because a few months later, my class at Toi Primary School took a trip to Wilson Airport, where we were shown around and inside planes. I was mesmerized by the engines and the cockpit.

One weekend, I took a bus (Kenya Bus number 4) from Riruta Satellite to Community to the Kenya National Library - something I did every Saturday to read and check out books. On that weekend, I found a picture book by an author called Dale Carnegie. It had a phrase that goes something like this: “Humans can do basically everything an animal can do - swim in water like fish, hop up and down like a kangaroo, walk on all fours like a lion, and even slither on the ground like a lizard or snake. The only thing a human cannot do without the help of machines is to fly.”

The book followed the history of the magic of flight, from the Wright brothers to current jets. I was hooked.

Fast forward: as a student on scholarship in the United States, I was still dreaming of flying. I even got a job at Spokane, Washington Airport so that I could be around planes and pilots, while pursuing my communication career.

Many years later, life happened: family, children, career, no time, not enough money. Then, in 2023, I woke up one morning and decided to transform my dream into a reality.

I enrolled at Ninety Nine’s Flying School at Wilson Airport, in Nairobi. For months, I spent sleepless nights studying, weekends and nearly every evening spent flying. Six months after enrolling, I was able to undertake my solo - fly alone as a pilot in Malindi. A few months later, seven months from the time I started my classes, I was tested, passed and received my Private Pilot License. My dream as a young, poor boy had become a reality. I could now fly as a hobby.

I have been flying, building hours with 99s Flying School and Kenya Aeronautical College until I am a proficient pilot. I have flown and trained on several aircraft in Kenya and South Africa. Today, with over 300 hours, I fly whenever I can to different locations - which is basically every weekend.

I have been recording my flying adventures and now want to share them with all, and especially you, so that every dreaming boy or girl is encouraged - to know that with God, determination and planning, everything is possible.

I have succeeded in achieving my dream due to the support of my family and friends, and especially my children - MCM.
