The casual way in which the Notwithstanding Clause is being normalized by provinces like ON and QC is a horrifying development. Its use was always imagined to be rare and accompanied by great stigma. Overriding people's rights should never become a routine political practice.
No one should have hateful rhetoric and behaviour directed towards them. Skippy has made it clear he won’t address the role he and his campaign plays in such behaviour. Stop expecting better from him. Just make him irrelevant.
I’d love for people spewing these sorts of messages to defend their positions with factual arguments. It wouldn’t shock me that most don’t even know what that sentence actually means.
1/ It’s more important than ever for political leaders - on left and the right - to resist the temptation to profit from political polarization. In practical terms this means not platforming wedge issues and instead, normalizing listening and consensus building.
Certain politicians should be put to task for inspiring and normalizing this kind of sentiment. But instead one will be promoted to lead a political party. Those with the power to shape Canada’s political discourse ought to be deeply ashamed.
If you can walk up to the Deputy PM and call her those names yet still claim there is no freedom in Canada, I would suggest trying that with Putin. This behaviour does not make me think ‘I wonder what I can learn about vaccine science from this man.’
