Proud moment for Fuquay-Varina Athletics as we honor a legacy that has meant so much to our softball program and school community. Congratulations to Coach Clarke on this well deserved recognition. 🥎#RollBengals
Being positive isn’t about ignoring problems or wearing “rose-colored glasses.”
It’s about staying constructive, refusing to complain without a solution, and choosing to help things move forward.
Be the person who looks for solutions. 💛

"Collaboration is the heartbeat of a school. We don’t want students to have one great year with one great teacher; we want them to experience excellence in every classroom, every year. And we need each other to make that happen."

The way we learn and grow is through reflection. You can use restorative practices to address negative behavior and still hold kids accountable for their actions.
So many schools still use lunch detention as a discipline tool. But here’s the truth backed by research:
❌ Punitive discipline like detention doesn’t stop negative behavior. It often makes it worse...leading to more apathy, defiance, and academic decline.
❌ Detention and similar punishments disproportionately impact marginalized students and feed into the “school-to-prison pipeline.”
✅ What works instead? Approaches that involve reflection, repairing harm, and building connections.
Kids don’t grow through punishment. They grow when we invest in teaching them responsibility, giving them chances to reflect, and showing them they still belong. Even when they mess up.
I think it's time we rethink lunch detention.
Our kids deserve more.
Students who have lagging executive functioning skills face massive challenges in their day. The approach of adults working with students will define their ability to develop those skills along with a high level of resilience, or to continue trying to cope with maladaptive behaviors that often get punished. Over time, if adult responses never change to meet the executive function needs, students become labeled as “low”, “behavior kid”, “lazy”, “apathetic”, and so many others.
We MUST change the way we behavior, looking beyond how it makes us feel, to what the student needs truly are.
