@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 A5: We can work together by building a strong school community and culture. By creating a strong school site, the students will feel empowered and feel accepted.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 A4: I will engage in self-reflection about my beliefs, practices, and biases by ensuring that everything I do is what is best for my students. Staying up to date with education and trying to constantly stay educated can also help me self-reflect.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I will create a safe environment by making sure my students feel welcomed and free to be themselves. I will create a brave space by ensuring the classroom is safe for them to take risks and try new things.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 A2: Empathy means to have ability to understand the feelings others might have. As teachers, it is important to have empathy for our students so that we can better guide them in how to handle their feelings.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 A1: We can advocate for our students by first building strong relationships with them. Building relationships with our students allows us to get to know our students as individuals. This allows us to better understand the needs of our students.
@ms_nagua@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 I completely agree that timed math reduces students confidence levels. This makes students feel like they are bad at math when no one can be bad at math.
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 One reason for math anxiety is when teachers give out timed tests that require speed and memorization. Often times students try to get as many done as possible but end up get them all wrong and never advance mathematically.
@AllisonCheatwo1@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler showing students math problems can be changed to better solve the problem is such a really good way to introduce students to math flexibility. Number talks encourage many different ways to see one math problem and typically requires mental math.
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 We can encourage students to use numbers flexibly by providing concrete objects that the students can manipulate to develop their own understanding. We can also make math more relatable. making connections between real life and math can help students when it comes to math.
@rDuran17@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler I agree that we as educators want to provide our students with the ability to answer many math questions. reason and deep understand are key to success!
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 Memorizing math facts is "unnecessary and damaging" because there is no deeper understanding. fast facts is a "just do it" activity that does not give students the chance to reason through each math problem. it is a timed text that makes very little sense to students.
