On the morning of September 11, 2001, FDNY firefighter and Navy veteran Tim Duffy was tuning his 2000 Harley Davidson Super Glide Sport when the first plane hit. He put the plug back in, pulled on his FDNY shirt, and rode toward lower Manhattan.

Shortly after he got to the firehouse and put on his gear, the South Tower fell. As he drove toward the rubble, a photographer captured him on the motorcycle in full gear. After he arrived, the North Tower came down and buried him. He clawed free and went back to work. In the first hour he lost nearly three dozen friends. Months of recovery followed.

The motorcycle made it through that day. Duffy kept riding it for years, later putting it in service of 1 Soldier 1 Dog 1 Team, the group he started to match shelter dogs with veterans and first responders living with PTSD. This year the bike went into the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

Duffy also served as Grand Marshal at Sturgis. He still shrugs off the word “hero.” He says he had a job to do.
