Introducing the final of four fantastic Sonic Labs mentors, @capitELIst!
We asked Eli from our team at the Fantom Foundation a few questions about himself and what he's bringing to the Sonic Labs teams as a mentor π
Can you share a bit about yourself?
Law was my midlife crisis degree. Before that, I did what I was expected to do with an MBA. I have always loved the intersection of finance, technology, and law and have not looked back since working in fintech and crypto law, a field that evolves daily.
I first discovered crypto when returning from a libertarian conference. I lent someone $30 for his cab fare. He repaid in BTC. That was 2015. Two years later, during the ICO boom, I was working at a crypto VC where we invested in Avalanche, Fantom, Hashgraph, Solana, Polkadot, and Tezos.
It was there I first learned of Andre Cronje. In 2018, I first met Michael Kong and the rest of the Fantom team in Seoul and Sydney. In 2022, I joined the team as legal counsel.
What will you focus on with the teams?
I bet I will conclude our mentor session recommending that you obtain advice that accounts for your specific legal circumstances from a lawyer in the jurisdiction you operate in.
But until I spoil things with legal disclaimers, we can discuss how to approach risk, governance, and regulation; how to handle your relevant commercial relationships, understanding your data privacy and IP issues, and time permitting, a bird-eye review of securities law, AML/KYC requirements, and should you have it, we can overcome your fear of lawyers. (Jurisphopia I think itβs called.)
What do you like to see in early-stage teams?
For me, itβs all about the team. I like to see a founder team of dreamers, builders, and doers. It takes dreamers to see a need that no one else has seen and dream up a solution to a problem. It takes builders to build a tower brick by brick, and maybe sometimes test in prod (not legal advice). It takes doers to get shit done, to knock on doors and virtual meetings. I like spending time with such people, but mostly, with an enterprising innovator who excels at all three: s/he dreams, builds, and does.
We are excited for Eli to be a mentor to the Sonic Labs teams.

The story of Kenshin Fox, the embodiment of strength and swordsmanship, became etched in the annals of the blockchain, a testament to the resilience, collaboration, and unwavering spirit that could carve your own path in the ever-evolving landscape of the crypto world.
And so, they persevered. Their legend grew, their impact rippling through the Fantom realm. They became not just conquerors, but teachers, heroes, symbols of hope in a world of uncertainty.
