Undeniably flawed Jesus-follower. Husband to @anakbateman. Dad to two amazing kids. I get to pastor a pretty amazing group of people known as @CityChurchKnox.
Just because I don’t think we’ve stirred enough up on this yet…
I think Sabbaticals belong in the same category as things like the liturgical calendar and seminary:
Really helpful, beneficial things that are completely optional and not in the Bible 😉
“Any advice for me?,” asked the new 23 year-old pastoral resident.
“Yes,” I said. “Don’t read The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry for at least 15 years.”
Chipotle’s business strategy to decrease their quantity and quality of food—while hiking their prices—is a very interesting approach.
Let’s see how it works out for them.
Meanwhile you can find me at Dos Bros ✌️
Turning Point’s alternative halftime show will celebrate faith, family, and freedom.
It will feature Kid Rock, who famously penned such family-friendly and patriotic lyrics as “I’ll start an escort service for all the right reasons,” and “I shot the sheriff and the deputy too.”
Pastors: if you’re looking for a conference that will *actually* equip you to lead more faithfully: go ahead and sign yourself up for one of these.
You won’t regret it.
I wish every Lead Pastor I know could...
• Hear Adam Bailie talk about 8 disciplines required for effectively leading change (it's a future book)
• Be prayed for by John Durham, while he kneels on the ground & fervently seeks God
• Share meals with other guys carrying similar pastoral weight to realize they aren't alone
• Talk through details of discipleship, worship, leading staff, and navigating growth barriers with other practitioners who are in the trenches
• Meet an incredible spectrum of fellow lead pastors: bold revitalizers, humble megachurch pastors, shepherds of cowboys, and spiritual fathers to collegians.
This was my week. Learning, investing, sharpening, laughing, and collaborating. Mind is tired. Spirit is filled.
If you'd like a week like this...
Join me for a Lead Pastor Intensive at some point this year.

"We must ruthlessly eliminate the assumption that only people who are right about everything have anything to teach us."
~ Dallas Willard
You don't need to agree with everything to benefit from something.
@lukedsimmons These are great, Luke. I personally badly needed the reminder on #1 and #5.
On #2, I think it’s easy for folks to miss that Paul did this *often* in his letters. Not bc Scripture is insufficient, but because much of it makes rational sense.
Might be a hot take, but Kiffin doesn’t owe anybody anything prior to the end of Ole Miss’ season or until he officially takes another job.
Just because the coaching carousel started in September this year doesn’t mean we orient everything else around it 🤷♂️
NEW: Ole Miss is looking for clarity this week about Lane Kiffin’s future with the Rebels, @PeteNakos reports.
Members of Kiffin's family visited Gainesville Sunday and Baton Rouge Monday✈️

This right here! Incredible example of it. Was a moment where the question was “aren’t you concerned that people might become anxious because of a variety of things you choose not to say?”
Sweeney’s answer: “No.” 😂
People are talking about this exchange for a million different reasons.
But maybe the biggest practical takeaway is being overlooked:
This was a TEXTBOOK example of how to remain a non-anxious presence while in the company of anxious & manipulative behavior.
