“Coattails” refers to the phenomenon when enthusiasm and turnout for the candidate at the top of the ticket benefits the down-ballot candidates.

@SteveHiltonx is the top of our ticket in California.

He has raised almost $30 million this cycle; not one Republican candidate in California even comes close to that number.

Public criticism of Hilton, for any reason, is self-sabotage for every down-ballot race by either (a) transforming coattails to drag, or (b) removing the coattails benefit from your own campaign.

It’s also a betrayal of the California voter.
