“It has been over 100 years since the General Assembly established the current state flag design. Pennsylvanians deserve a state flag that they can be proud of.” Thank you, @RepJoeWebster! Looking forward to a flag Pennsylvania embraces enough to fly proudly from their homes.
State Rep. Joe Webster (D., Montgomery) wants to establish a commission to redesign Pennsylvania's flag, arguing that many would struggle to identify it because PA's is "one of twenty state flags that features a seal on a blue background." https://t.co/eYHkM1hlWw
@wewwers And today, you’re more likely to see the civil-rights-era revival of the slaver’s flag being flown by everyday people than the official PA state flag.
We need a bolder flag! Thankfully, we’ve done that and preserved a fair bit of history as well: https://t.co/sATKpWAbTh
@PhillyInquirer Shoutout to whoever made sure green was on the left so the colors would line up with the parts of the motto they represent, y'all did your research (@maerunes? @SamMorrisDesign? @jasenlo123? Come get your flowers 💚💛💙) https://t.co/sATKpWAbTh
Pennsylvania is the birthplace of our democracy and our freedom — and in 2026, we’ll celebrate America’s 250th anniversary right here in the Commonwealth where it started.
With all eyes on Pennsylvania, our new license plates will celebrate that heritage — and remind the country that here in Pennsylvania, we will let freedom ring.
@Moshe_H_ Flags are meant to signal at a distance (quickly identifiable) and be memorable. That’s what they were designed for hundreds of years ago, and that’s what many of these “new” flags have in common. This isn’t a wave of reinvention, it’s rediscovery!
@Moshe_H_ Contemporary? Not necessarily. The #KeystoneFlag draws symbolically from PA’s coat of arms (dating back over 200yrs), and tricolor flags are hardly a new invention. When it comes to flags, design is a good value to have!
My daughter asked me to print out a picture of the Utah flag and some nice Utah pictures for a class project. When she saw the printout she said hey, that looks totally different than the flag in my book.
Turns out Utah just changed their flag and it took official effect only this March!
She took another look at it and said oh! A beehive, because it's the Beehive State! 🤩
@twonnet@willrallison Honestly, yeah. We’ve gone DEEP into the symbolism of our current flag and coat of arms over the years, and the horses are literally the ONLY part without symbolism 😂
@GuyAPerson@willrallison Heard. Just keeping in mind that Pennsylvania is SO much more than two cities and two regions… there’s at least six distinct regions that would take offense to being lumped in with another! Designing something for as many people as possible is a tough balancing act 😅
@pacpaxpam@willrallison We decided it was time to break the cycle, and started offering a flag anyone can fly regardless if it ever sees official adoption (and plenty of folks across the Commonwealth now are!): https://t.co/LYosi5Mdr7
Does “respecting the state flag” include knowing the difference between a “coat of arms” and a “crest”? Because @RepMunroe’s memorandum just suggested our state flag looks like this:
Proper folding procedure won’t matter to everyday Pennsylvanians who are never inspired to fly the state flag in the first place. Maybe we should start with adopting a design people are already embracing across the Commonwealth: https://t.co/LYosi5MLgF
Does “respecting the state flag” include knowing the difference between a “coat of arms” and a “crest”? Because @RepMunroe’s memorandum just suggested our state flag looks like this:
State Rep. Brian Munroe (D., Bucks) wants to provide for the Department of General Services to provide for an official process to fold the state flag. "Including these procedures in statute is a simple way to respect the state flag."
