there's a big difference btwn being able to buy something and being able to afford it.

having money coming in every month can make it easy to believe that anything with a price tag you can cover is within your means but that's not true.

i remember a young entrepreneur who landed his first major contract. after receiving his payment, he immediately started shopping for expensive clothes, the latest phone and a luxury watch. he could pay for all of them, so he believed he could afford them. few months later, business slowed down. new contracts didn't come in as quickly but his lifestyle stayed the same. the money disappeared faster than he expected and he found himself struggling to cover little basic business expenses.

that experience taught him a lesson he never forgot: just because you can buy something doesn't mean you can afford it

before making a major purchase, ask yourself whether you could comfortably buy it more than once without putting urself under financial pressure. if the answer is no, it is wiser to wait.

today, people ask me, i have $20k, should i buy a car? my first question is always, what kind of car?

if you're planning to spend 16k on a car when your total savings are $20k, you probably can't afford it unless it's an income producing asset such as one used for a ride hailing business or uber, etc. otherwise, you're taking on more expenses. you'll have to pay for fuel, maintenance, repairs, insurance and other running costs.

i know it's exciting when you start making money and you want people to see that your life has changed but slow down.

just cos you can buy something doesn't mean you can afford it. real wealth isn't about proving you've made it. it's about making financial decisions that allow you to keep growing long after the excitement of your first success has passed.
