Zimbabweans and Nigerians Dominate the List of Over 7,000 Foreign Academics Working in SA Public Universities, With More Than 1,800 Zimbabweans and Over 900 Nigerians Employed

The Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, chaired by Tebogo Letsie, instructed public higher learning institutions to submit detailed records of all foreign academics by 18 March 2026.

The directive followed after whistleblower reports and public allegations that foreign nationals are being prioritised in hiring and promotion processes over qualified South Africans.

According to documents supplied to The Truth Panther, analysis of foreign academic staff in public higher education institutions, based on 2024 audited HEMIS data and preliminary 2025 figures, records 6,739 staff in 2024 and 7,026 in 2025.

Zimbabwean academics account for 27%, while Nigerians make up 14%, alongside representation from across Africa and globally including India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and China.
