With Guillermo del Toro’s recommendation, I started watching Apple TV+‘s “Widow’s Bay.” It’s so incredibly good that I couldn’t stop, so I binged through Episode 9 in one go. This horror-comedy, executive produced by Hiro Murai, is set in a cursed island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. Dense fog, violent storms, and all kinds of supernatural phenomena descend upon the town. It’s packed with horror elements, one after another. Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it. The pacing is excellent, and the balance between horror and humor is just right. Ironically, the mayor’s tireless efforts to attract tourists reminded me of Mayor Vaughn from “Jaws.” The townspeople are wonderfully eccentric as well, with personalities straight out of “Twin Peaks.” It’s been a long time since a series pulled me in this completely. I can’t wait for next Wednesday’s final episode.
Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
“There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
“If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!
“Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”
You gotta hand it to Bill Pullman in Lost Highway: “That’s fucking crazy, man” is the perfect response to a frightening being telling you he’s in your house right now
People on TikTok are like “If someone you don’t know says hi to you as you pass them on a sidewalk, they’re engaging in a manipulation tactic called ‘boundary-bombing’—here’s 5 signs to look out for” and then their next post is “The Village Theory” about how people need community
Ever throw a party that didn’t hit? At least it won’t end up in the history books! On May 18th, 1922, patrons of the literary arts conspired to bring together two giants of Modernist literature, James Joyce & Marcel Proust… (more in replies ⬇️) #LiteraryTrivia#literature
Hasan says he’ll apologize to Schiff if he “lifts a finger to protect democracy.”
Schiff led the first impeachment against Trump. He’s done more to protect democracy than Piker has ever done or will do.
Hasan is nothing but a whiny little prick with a camera and microphone.
Reminder that Hasan hoped that Adam Schiff was sent to prison when Trump invented charges against him.
Hasan acknowledges that the charges were purely political and that he didnt care.
I just think we should match Hasan's energy.
@seaofbelIs The authorities are probably going to be much more interested in the BILLION DOLLARS left lying around than the deaths of three people. Not saying this’ll get Nikki off the hook, but it (and her wounds) will for sure show this isn’t some simple killing spree on her part.
Actual Chinese leftists are mad at Hasan Piker for strongly defending and praising China, calling out the clear contradictions in his position.
Labor activist Kevin Lin says the Chinese economy combines state, private, and foreign capital in ways that exploit workers, with zero independent trade unions and workers having minimal influence on their workplaces.
Lin sees this as fundamentally "exploitative" and therefore, capitalist. He can't fathom why Piker would object to this kind of "capitalistic exploitation" in the US but condones it in China, all in the name of anti-imperialism.
Taiwan-based progressive Brian Hioe calls it Orientalism at its finest because to Piker, the Chinese people are just props in his personal anti-West crusade.
Piker is quite honestly the worst kind of leftist because he's a total hypocrite. He doesn't champion the values he claims, all the while, he enjoys the freedom and privileges of the West.
Notice how nobody is calling the Islamic Center shooting an “inevitable backlash” for October 7th, the Islamic regime launching missiles across the ME, or Islamist massacres in Nigeria because everyone understands blaming random Muslims for that would be completely deranged.
The problem is that many people seem to think that sexual = bad. It’s okay for things to be sexual. Sexual isn’t inherently bad. Humans are sexual beings. And sexual content in art has legitimacy. If your objection to a painting is solely because it is sexual, you are practising prudishness, not criticism. The critical questions should be about the craft, meaning and ethics, all of which apply to any subject matter/art form, sexual or non-sexual.
