Following World War II, approximately 3 million German soldiers were held in Soviet Union camps as forced labor, with many beginning to return home after Stalin’s death in 1953.
While large-scale repatriation occurred in 1955 following Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's visit to Moscow, the final, last surviving German POWs were released and returned home in 1956.
