When it comes to Messi vs. Ronaldo conversations, you don’t need to make logical arguments. Just stick to banter or tweet your opinion and move on, because the moment you try to have a logical conversation using facts, figures, and context, most Messi fans will eventually resort to insulting you.

You might prefer Messi because he has more league titles than Ronaldo. I prefer Ronaldo because he has won league titles in England, Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

You might prefer Messi because he has won the most Golden Boots in history. I prefer Ronaldo because he is the highest goalscorer in football history. He has also scored at least 100 goals for every club he has played for.

You might prefer Messi because he won the World Cup. I prefer Ronaldo because he won five Champions League titles with two different clubs. You need seven games to win a World Cup; you need 13 to win the Champions League. He also won it three times in a row.

You prefer the player with eight Ballon d’Or awards an award voted for by around 100 journalists worldwide. I prefer the player who won five Ballon d’Ors despite not being the media favourite.

You see? It’s all about context. It’s based on preference. You prefer a playmaker; I prefer a goalscorer who decides games.

A lot of Messi fans will insult you simply because Ronaldo is your GOAT. To save yourself the endless back and forth, either stick to bantering with them or tweet your opinion and move on. They’re not ready to see the debate from the angle some of us see it, and that’s fine.

I am a Ronaldo fan

My argument is simple: I value longevity, adaptation, individual responsibility, elite-level performance across different environments, big-game scoring, physical transformation, and the ability to remain decisive for an extraordinary length of time.

Ronaldo has:

• More career goals.
• More Champions League goals.
• More Champions League knockout goals.
• More Champions League titles as the main attacking superstar of his team.
• More international goals.
• More international appearances.
• More hat-tricks.
• More goals with his weaker foot.
• More headed goals.
• More goals outside the penalty box.
• A remarkable record of succeeding in multiple leagues and countries.

He was a superstar in England, Spain, Italy and Portugal. He changed his game completely as he aged: winger, explosive dribbler, inside forward, devastating goalscorer, penalty-box striker. The fact that he could become arguably the greatest goalscorer in football history after losing some of the physical qualities that made him famous is one of the most impressive things about his career.

And then there is the Champions League.

Messi is an incredible footballer and arguably the greatest natural playmaker ever. But Ronaldo's Champions League résumé is ridiculous. He is the competition's all-time leading scorer and has repeatedly produced his best football in the biggest knockout games. When the question is: "Who do I want when everything is on the line?" Ronaldo's case is extremely strong.

Messi's supporters also cannot selectively use international football. Before 2021, Messi had lost the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals. After the 2016 Copa América final, he even announced his retirement from international football before returning.

That doesn't erase what he eventually achieved. The Copa América and World Cup absolutely count. But the earlier failures and the emotional pressure surrounding Argentina are part of the story too.

And yes, Messi's PSG period deserves criticism. He joined a team with Neymar and Mbappé and PSG still failed to win the Champions League. Messi won Ligue 1, but his overall PSG spell was nowhere near the level expected from a player regarded as the greatest ever. Ronaldo, by contrast, went to Juventus at 33, won the league twice, became the club's top scorer in his first season, and continued producing at an elite level in a new league.

The argument is not that Messi is bad. That would be stupid.

The argument is that Ronaldo's greatness is more difficult to replicate.

Messi is probably the better pure playmaker.

Ronaldo is the greater scorer, competitor, physical phenomenon, big-game goalscorer and example of sustained individual excellence across different environments.

So when people say, "Messi is obviously better and there is no debate," I totally disagree.

There is absolutely a debate.

Cristiano Ronaldo has one of the strongest GOAT cases football has ever seen.

You'll never make it look like the World Cup is the decider.

In a game where it's a WIN or GO HOME under intense pressure.

I genuinely don’t understand why one match at 39 years old suddenly settles a debate that has lasted nearly two decades.

If yesterday convinced you Messi is the GOAT, then you probably made up your mind long before kickoff.

For over 15 years, Ronaldo and Messi pushed each other to levels football had never seen. Every time one won something, the other responded. Every Ballon d’Or, every Champions League, every league title, every Golden Boot, every international tournament became another chapter in the greatest rivalry the sport has ever witnessed. Yet somehow, after all those years, people now want to reduce the debate to what they’re doing at the very end of their careers.

Where was this energy when Ronaldo won the Nations League? Did everyone suddenly declare the debate over? No. Because most people understood that a player’s entire body of work is what should be judged, not a single tournament or a single game.

If you believe Messi is the greatest, that’s completely fair. He’s earned that opinion through an extraordinary career. But don’t act like yesterday magically created a gap that never existed.

As a Ronaldo supporter, my opinion isn’t changing because of one match. Ronaldo’s legacy wasn’t built in one night, and it won’t be erased in one either.

We’re talking about a player who conquered England, Spain and Italy. A player who finished as the all-time top scorer in the Champions League, the competition where the pressure is at its absolute highest. A player with five Champions Leagues, multiple league titles in different countries, five Ballon d’Ors, a European Championship, a Nations League, and over 900 career goals. That’s not a legacy that disappears because another great player had another great night.

The funniest part is that people always move the goalposts depending on who they’re trying to praise. When Ronaldo was carrying Portugal, they said international football wasn’t enough. When he dominated the Champions League, they said club football wasn’t everything. When he became football’s greatest goalscorer, they said goals aren’t everything. Now one brilliant performance from Messi is somehow the final piece of evidence.

It doesn’t work like that.

Football isn’t a courtroom where one game becomes the final verdict.

The GOAT debate has always been subjective because both players have arguments that will probably never be matched again. Some value playmaking, others value goals. Some value longevity in one system, others value adapting and succeeding across multiple leagues. Some prioritize trophies, others prioritize individual dominance. That’s why the debate has lasted so long.

As a Ronaldo fan, I don’t need yesterday’s match to change my mind, just as Messi fans didn’t change theirs after Ronaldo’s greatest nights.

I’ve watched Ronaldo for nearly two decades. I’ve seen him reinvent himself from an explosive winger into arguably the greatest goalscorer football has ever produced. I’ve watched him deliver in Champions League knockout games year after year, score in finals, carry clubs and country, and remain relevant across generations.

One incredible performance from Messi doesn’t erase any of that.

You can celebrate Messi without pretending Ronaldo’s legacy suddenly became smaller overnight.

If yesterday confirmed Messi as your GOAT, that’s your opinion, and you’re entitled to it. But don’t expect every Ronaldo fan to abandon 20 years of evidence because of one more chapter in a rivalry that has already given football everything.

The debate didn’t start yesterday, and it certainly didn’t end yesterday.

What is certain is that You can’t outdo me in believing Ronaldo is the GOAT. I have been here all my life, and no amount of recency bias will change my stance. Ronaldo has decided more games through sheer individual brilliance than anyone I’ve ever watched.

Whatever is happening now does not erase what he has already done, and it certainly does not affect his legacy as the greatest of all time.
