Fake Japanese Cops Running Scams Out of a Phnom Penh Condo
After a Chinese man fell to his death from the JD Polman condo building in Phnom Penh's Sen Sok district this morning, police locked down the building and raided room 1316. What they found inside was a scam operation impersonating Japanese police.
Eight suspects were detained, five Japanese nationals, one Taiwanese, and two Chinese. Officers seized 14 phones, three iPads, a computer, five fake Japanese police uniforms, two police caps, and forged documents including fake arrest warrants and contracts. The operation was targeting victims in Japan, using Cambodia as a base while posing as Japanese law enforcement.
The Phnom Penh governor and deputy national police commissioner personally oversaw the operation. All eight suspects have been sent to Phnom Penh police headquarters for legal processing.
