Not 100% yet but I'm hearing that Turkey and Australia will now be playing for the 'Crazy' John Ilhan memorial trophy on Sunday. Touch of class from both federations in recognising a great Turkish-Australian 👏👏
FT thoughts:
- Poor first half, much better second half. The goal shows the value of having a running 10 in Connor Metcalfe, who had a good half overall off the back of a good game vs. Mexico.
- Like against Mexico, Australia - at least from minute 46 to 75 - were more composed on the ball in the second half than in the first.
- The chances that Cédric Itten was able to generate late in the 2nd half were a little bit concerning.
- Patrick Beach had a strong game. Souttar was also good and his ability to find line-breaking passes through the centre of the pitch is extremely valuable.
- Volpato, albeit with few touches and only 45 minutes of football, showed his quality and why he should start. He has more time on the ball than any other attacking midfielder in the team.
- Irankunda played with more composure in the second half. Who will start out of him, Metcalfe and Volpato will be very interesting.
- Burgess, Geria and Devlin did well. Burgess' pass for Yengi's goal was excellent and showed the value of having a left-footer playing on the left side of defence.
- Touré's ability to generate counter-attacking moments is invaluable. When he gets in behind in wide channels, there need to be forward runners supporting him by getting into the box.
