During the 1980s, as a student at Somali National University, former Somali Prime Minister Dr. Abdiweli Gaas experienced a system that provided remarkable support for young Somalis pursuing higher education. Education was completely free. Healthcare was free. Students received housing assistance, a monthly stipend, and a guaranteed job upon graduation. Outstanding students, including Gaas, were even sent abroad for advanced studies all at the government’s expense.
The country enjoyed a very low crime rate and affordable electricity, creating a stable environment for learning. Dr. Gaas graduated with a BA in Economics, summa cum laude, from Somali National University in 1984. He later moved to the United States, where he earned an MA in Economics from Vanderbilt University in 1988 as an AFGRAD Fellow and served as a Bradley Fellow at George Mason University. He is telling us that the Somali education system and curriculum were so strong that he did not have to repeat any years or take remedial courses when he began his postgraduate studies in America.
