Update: Hidden resort fees died May 12, 2025. Thank you to all who met with us in DC + beyond. We'll have fond memories of all the lawsuits & advocacy.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is at The Whitney to announce a new rule aimed at banning hidden junk fees for people booking hotels.
“If you do not change your practices, city government will change them for you,” he says.
This is the latest DCWP-involved crackdown on junk fees.
Today Zohran announced a new rule banning hidden junk fees at hotels.
The rule applies to NYC hotels, but also to hotel stays in other destinations that New Yorkers book in the city.
The FTC Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees is now in effect. FTC staff has published FAQs to help inform consumers and businesses about the Rule: https://t.co/Sd5kut6RWm
The House just passed a bill to ban hidden hotel resort fees so now it is on to the Senate and then the President (the FTC ban will be implemented soon but a law through Congress is always the best) https://t.co/XJFVQ3n7Yi
@vtimd@alexlmiller All the money from resort fees goes back into the hotel's general fund. You are not paying for any sort of amenity when you pay a resort fee. It's just a way for the hotel to lie about the advertised price (until about 120 days from now).
