this page is one of the most important moments for understanding sukuna because, for the first time, he admits that his life was not predetermined. many readers reduce this scene to “he regrets nothing,” when what he actually says is far more nuanced.

“actually… no. i had different paths i could have traversed. two, to be precise.” that single line destroys the idea that sukuna became who he is because fate forced him to. he acknowledges choice. there were alternatives. he simply did not take them.

what makes this interesting is that he never says he chose wrong. he merely admits that other possibilities existed. there is no self pity, no attempt to excuse himself with childhood trauma or destiny. unlike many villains who shift responsibility onto circumstance, sukuna accepts ownership over his life without apologizing for it.

the panel composition reinforces this.

behind him stand yorozu and uraume, two people who loved him in entirely different ways.

yorozu ( that’s what’s I think )represents unconditional affection, obsession, someone who wanted to reach him emotionally.

uraume represents unwavering loyalty, devotion without demanding that sukuna become someone else.

they stand on opposite sides of him, almost like two roads branching away from the same point. sukuna never looks at either of them. his eyes remain forward. even while acknowledging those paths, he doesn’t turn toward them. visually, gege is showing that sukuna recognizes those possibilities but has already moved beyond them.

then comes perhaps the most revealing line.

“i feared my own curse would immolate me.”

people often read “curse” here as cursed energy, but it reads more like the nature within him, the insatiable hunger, violence, and desire that define his existence. even sukuna understood that if he tried to suppress who he fundamentally was, it would destroy him from the inside.

that’s exactly why the final line matters.

“and yet, i couldn’t help but spit out the curses stirring deep within my viscera.”

it’s an incredibly physical metaphor. not his heart. not his mind. his viscera, his guts, his very core. hatred, violence, instinct, they’re described as something living inside him that has to be expelled. it almost sounds involuntary, like breathing or vomiting. he’s not saying, “i wanted to become a monster.” he’s saying that denying those impulses would’ve been the greater torment.

this is why sukuna’s philosophy has always been about authenticity, no matter how horrific that authenticity is. he would rather become the most feared person in history than live a life that betrays what he believes himself to be.

that’s also why he respects strength so deeply. to him, strength is what allows someone to live honestly. weakness forces compromise. compromise is a denial of the self. in sukuna’s eyes, that’s a fate worse than death.

this panel isn’t about redemption, nor is it about regret. it’s about self awareness. sukuna understands there were other lives he could have lived. he simply refuses to pretend he wanted them. + another detail i rarely see people mention is gege’s visual storytelling. whenever sukuna’s more human side is allowed to surface, gege consistently draws him with his normal face. the deformed bone growth covering the right side of his face is either reduced or absent altogether. when sukuna fully embraces the role of the calamity, however, gege emphasizes that monstrous side again, bringing the bone growth back into focus. it’s a subtle visual language that reflects which aspect of sukuna gege wants us to pay attention to. in this scene, where sukuna is reflecting on his own choices rather than reveling in destruction, his human face is what takes center stage.
