THE DANGEROUS DESIRE | NOLA DARLING & OPAL GILSTRAP — SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT (2017)
WHEN YOUR BREAK FROM MEN COMES WITH ONE VERY SPECIFIC EXCEPTION
Let’s talk about Nola and Opal.
Because when Nola Darling decides she needs a break from men, naturally the solution is not celibacy.
It is Opal Gilstrap.
An ex.
A woman Nola already knows.
A woman who knows Nola right back.
And suddenly the cleanse becomes considerably less cleansing.
Nola spends so much of her romantic life defending herself.
Her freedom.
Her body.
Her refusal to belong to anyone.
Jamie wants permanence.
Mars wants devotion.
Greer wants to understand why being Greer is somehow not enough.
Everybody seems to want something from Nola that requires her to explain herself.
Opal feels different.
With Opal, Nola does not have to fight to remain Nola.
She can simply want.
Which, for a woman who has turned autonomy into both philosophy and armor, is dangerously seductive.
DeWanda Wise plays Nola like desire is never the problem.
The problem is what people try to attach to it.
Expectation.
Possession.
Definition.
Ilfenesh Hadera gives Opal exactly the kind of confidence that makes all of that noise disappear.
She does not need to conquer Nola.
She already knows what being with her feels like.
And that history changes everything.
Their attraction does not begin with discovery.
It begins with recognition.
The ease of touching someone whose body is not entirely new to you.
The confidence of returning somewhere you already know you like.
Very inconvenient for a cleanse.
And very convenient for us.
That is where the desire becomes dangerous.
Because Nola initially treats Opal like freedom.
A refuge from the exhausting politics surrounding the men in her life.
Sex without the same battle.
Intimacy without immediately feeling claimed.
Except Opal is not an escape hatch.
She is a person.
And people have a nasty habit of developing feelings.
Opal says she will not.
Nola certainly does not arrive looking for commitment.
Naturally, both assumptions age beautifully.
Because underneath all that physical ease is something Nola does not encounter very often:
safety.
She relaxes with Opal.
She talks about her.
She returns to her.
She meets Skylar.
And suddenly the woman who was supposed to represent uncomplicated desire begins looking suspiciously like something much more intimate.
By the time we see them again, eighteen months have passed.
And Nola Darling — patron saint of romantic compartmentalization — is actually in a committed relationship.
With Opal.
Of course, the chemistry has not exactly suffered.
If anything, now the desire has something it did not have before.
History.
Domesticity.
Love.
The sex is no longer a detour from Nola’s life.
It is part of the life she has built with Opal.
And that is what makes them so compelling.
Nola spends so much time insisting that desire should not automatically create ownership.
Opal may be the clearest proof that she is right.
Because their attraction works precisely when neither woman is trying to erase the other inside it.
Opal does not make Nola less free.
She makes freedom feel safe enough to share.
Some dangerous desires are dangerous because they make you lose control.
Nola and Opal?
Theirs is dangerous because Nola discovers something much more frightening.
Sometimes the person who lets you feel most free…
is the person you start wanting to come home to. 💋

THE LEADING LOVERS | FRANKIE ALAN & CAT MACKENZIE — LIP SERVICE (2010–2012)
WHEN THE WOMAN WHO BROKE YOUR HEART COMES HOME AND DISCOVERS SHE NEVER REALLY LEFT IT.
Let’s talk about Frankie Alan and Cat MacKenzie.
Frankie has been gone for two years.
Cat has had two years to get over her.
This should be plenty of time.
It isn’t.
When Frankie returns to Glasgow, she brings back everything Cat has spent those years trying to put somewhere safely in the past.
The attraction.
The anger.
The history.
And the deeply inconvenient fact that neither woman has ever quite stopped knowing the other too well.
Cat has built a life without Frankie.
Frankie walks back into it as though unfinished business were a perfectly reasonable reason to cross an ocean.
Which, for Frankie, it probably is.
Ruta Gedmintas gives Frankie exactly the kind of confidence that makes staying away from her sound considerably easier in theory. She is impulsive, restless and very good at behaving as though consequences are simply things that happen after the interesting part.
Cat is different.
Laura Fraser gives her all the caution Frankie seems to have misplaced somewhere in New York. Cat wants stability. Honesty. Something she can trust.
Frankie has historically provided approximately none of those things.
And yet.
Put them in the same room and all that sensible distance starts becoming remarkably difficult to maintain.
Because underneath the resentment is familiarity.
Underneath the familiarity is desire.
And underneath all of it is the uncomfortable possibility that what happened between them never really ended.
Frankie can flirt with other women.
Cat can try to move forward.
They can argue, retreat, make better choices and occasionally even convince themselves those choices might last.
Then they look at each other.
And there it is again.
That is what makes Frankie and Cat feel like the leading lovers of Lip Service. Their romance is not simply about whether two women still want each other.
They obviously do.
It is about whether wanting each other can ever become something safer than the thing that hurt them in the first place.
Cat needs a reason to trust Frankie again.
Frankie needs to become someone worth trusting.
Unfortunately, falling back in love is considerably faster.
Some love stories begin when two people meet.
Frankie Alan and Cat MacKenzie begin with the much more dangerous question of what happens when they already know exactly how much they can mean to each other.
They had the love story.
The trouble was surviving the sequel.

THE DEADLY ATTRACTION | HELENA PEABODY & DYLAN MORELAND — THE L WORD
WHEN THE WOMAN WHO SEEMS MOST OUT OF REACH TURNS OUT TO BE THE ONE WHO CAN HURT YOU MOST.
Let’s talk about Helena and Dylan.
Helena doesn’t just notice Dylan.
She locks onto her.
Part of the attraction is obvious from the start: Dylan is beautiful, elusive and seemingly unavailable, insisting she is straight and attached to a man. Which, of course, only makes Helena want to get closer.
And she does.
What begins as fascination quickly turns into an affair charged with exactly the kind of danger Helena is least equipped to resist. Dylan feels forbidden, unpredictable and just sincere enough to make Helena believe she may actually be falling for her.
That is what makes the whole thing so effective.
Helena isn’t only seduced by Dylan’s body. She is seduced by the possibility that beneath the mixed signals, the distance and the supposed heterosexual life, there is something real waiting to be claimed.
And for a while, it seems like there is.
Rachel Shelley gives Helena such open-hearted intensity here, while Alexandra Hedison makes Dylan feel unreadable in the most irresistible way. Every scene between them plays with that tension: desire, uncertainty and the constant suspicion that Helena is walking much deeper into this than she realizes.
Because she is.
What Helena doesn’t understand at first is that the danger isn’t simply loving someone complicated. It’s loving someone who entered her life with an agenda.
By the time the lawsuit hits and the scheme is exposed, attraction has already done its damage. Helena has not just been sleeping with Dylan. She has been believing in her.
Some deadly attractions are destructive because the feelings are false.
Others are worse because the feelings become real far too late to save anything.
Helena and Dylan?
Helena thought she was risking her heart on a woman who might want her back. The real danger was that Dylan was never the only thing pursuing her.
