The girl begged her new husband and in-laws to allow her to return to school, “but they wouldn’t let me.” Instead, she says, they cursed and beat her. For months she endured abuse and torture.

Remember: this was in Afghanistan before the Taliban took full control. The situation for girls is now far worse under the current regime. Child marriage, rape, and the systematic abuse of young girls have become even more widespread and normalized.
Yet in the West, almost no one seems to care.
