@OISB_IBSO Many thx to co-authors Dr. Suzana Gelova, Kassidy Doherty & Salma Alasmar! ๐ Take home from this paper: most common cancer mutational signature is analogous to patterns of intrinsic mutagenesis in many species, including humans & also likely tied to glycolytic sugar metabolism.
Thx! Shoutout to students Mahanish Thapa, Reena Fabros & Salma Alasmar for skillful work with tricky mutagens! ๐ Bottom line for paper: 3rd most common cancer mutational signature likely from endogenous formaldehyde (intracellular [FA] up to ~100 ยตM in humans, yes quite a lot).
A new tour de force effort from @KinChanPhD and colleagues examines mutational signatures caused by formaldehyde and acetaldehyde - A powerful and innovative system to study chemically induced mutation spectra!

With a high sensitivity yeast model for mutagenesis, SNP profiles from NCBI, and variants seen in human cancer (COSMIC), Dr. Kin Chan shows how trans lesion synthesis drives a big part of the endogenous mutational landscape. #ICEM2022
Thank you conference co-chairs @CaroleYauk @MarchettiFg @Genetic_Tox for opportunity to contribute to success of #ICEM2022! Congratulations to all @CIHR_IRSC Travel Awardees! ๐
Congratulations to the โฆ@CIHR_IHDCYHโฉ trainee travel award winners from the #ICEM2022! Thank you to CIHR for the knowledge and dissemination grant for these incredible students and post-docs from Canadian universities! Photo here with co-PI Dr. Kin Chan!! ๐๐
So cool to see MP Richard Cannings @CanningsNDP again at #SciParl2022! Second pic was selfie from 2018 at inaugural Science Meets Parliament. Thanks so much for your continued support of #science, Richard!
Fantastic for @MireilleKhacho & me to see @ChiefSciCan Dr. Mona Nemer again at #SciParl2022! Thank you so much for all the great work you and your staff do every day to support #science, Mona!
@ManojLalu It does feel that way sometimes, doesnโt it? I can think and learn much more on days that I leave Outlook closed and throw the phone away. Those habits get too Pavlovian sometimes. Technology is supposed to serve us, but really wonder if itโs other way around.
@dmonett Weโre very much in hype phase where #DeepLearning / #MachineLearning is thrown at seemingly every question. Some bona fide hits, but many misses. Problem is publication bias selects against misses, so those are dressed up as โhitsโ. Interesting preprint, thanks for sharing. ๐
@lukeoneil47@JennElizabethJ The US health care system is not particularly interested in providing care for patients. But it is very interested in maximizing profits by finding excuses not to provide care. Got to see this firsthand, dealing with insurance companies many times on my motherโs behalf.
