There is something special about having a passion for what you teach and there is something special about having a passion for who you teach , but when there's a passion for both, that's when magic happens!

Did you know that many babies learn to communicate using simple sign language even prior to using conventional speech?
Baby sign language is not a formal language with syntax and a grammatical structure (like American Sign Language, for example), but allows babies to use a small set of simple gestures to express their basic needs.
Many parents begin modeling it, alongside spoken language, from birth - but it is in the 8-10 month range that babies are typically capable of using it themselves.
It has a fairly short window of utility, but many parents find that pairing signs and words allows them to understand their children better and earlier.
And it’s pretty cool to watch.
Did/will you try signing with your child? Would love to hear about your experience.

@adamogardner@DeAngelisCorey Remains to be seen if it will happen, but it will effect my co-workers (and anyone with school aged kids) who live in NC for sure. So far as work, too much for a tweet, but will definitely cause chaos for public school districts and how Federal and State funds are distributed.

What a shame for Alabama that their (once) model program is eliminating this research-based resource for their PreK Educators. All children--and families--benefit from Developmentally Appropriate Practices. Children, Teachers and Families deserve better.
