Early covid aware people, the ones who looked for themselves, who accepted the grim reality unfolding, a lot of us knew pretty early, this could be a long time, decades maybe, we buckled up for the long haul (1
Ontario schools are in crisis mode.
No parent should ever have to worry that their child with complex needs will not be safe at school.
No parent should ever have to keep their child home from school because of a lack of special education support.
None of this is okay.
@safe_breathe@airspothealth I'd check the air quality in my classroom (the only one still using an air filter and have open windows) and compare it to other classroom in my school. Maybe that would help persuade some staff to take a proactive approach instead of dealing with Covid breakouts.
🎉 Win a free CO2 monitor! 🎉
In collaboration with @airspothealth, I will be giving away a monitor at the end of this week.

How would you use your AirSpot to advocate for clean air?
@SouthDallasFood Don't be afraid to add it to "westernized dishes". Chop some finely and put it in a grill cheese before you grill it. It's a whole other level of grilled cheese sandwich. Especially with a sharper, older chedder.
@SteeleThoughts Co-create the rules with your students after you build a relationship with them, and they with each other. Revisit these rules every few weeks. Toss the ones not needed and gradually release your policing responsibilities.
@callmemrmorris Baldwin, Thoreau, Hesse, Mann, Dostoyevski, Rushdie, and so many others have books so full of wisdom and universal truths about human beings. Deeply penetrating insights that helped me shape so much of my understanding. They are out there.
@RRDirector I agree with you about questioning the underlying reasons being critical, but I suspect it is simply about being an easy target. The jokes and memes are decades old and therefore easily accessible, and can be dismissed as "just jokes "
@RRDirector It's on the rise here in Canada and America too. My own son has faced it the last year and a half. Social media algorithms have played a big part. All the teenagers who use IG and Tik Tok get fed the same material and all of it becomes normalized for them.
@RRDirector That was exactly my parting words to him. "The work is yours to do. You're mad that I pointed out we have different points of view because you're white and I'm not. That's all yours." It sucked. It was not the last time I left a friendship for similar reasons. Self care.
@RRDirector I had a white friend get upset because I said a common friend would face racism in a new work/life situation. As I tried to unpack with them why they doubted my words, they said things that were clearly racist and ignorant, including."I don't see colour." End of friendship.
@callmemrmorris If you don't bring your authentic self to these discussions, the students ain't trusting you. If they don't trust you, there is no pedagogical stickiness, no engagement , no space for them to be authentic. You only get platitudes at best.
The more and more I see teachers, new teachers, teachers in training, and admin, the more and more I am coming to the realization that equity work in education can’t be compelled. People have to want to contribute to society in an equitable way.
@callmemrmorris As a "model minority" (damn, I hate that phrase) who has struggled with unpacking what makes me model and who is the judge (and executioner if I'm found wanting) of that, I've have issues with the term "Black Excellence" as we discuss during equity PD. Who gets to decide?
Let’s see if we’re still willing to center Blackness even though February is over. Let’s see if that equity talk is just talk and nothing more. Let’s see if we actually look at our Black students like the actual children that they are…
If people accept that SARS-CoV-2 is dangerous, the following things will happen:
▪︎ They will feel intense fear, as they will understand that they live in a world where they are in a constant risk of infection by a harmful virus and no one cares (not even "health experts")

Seeing a lot of media coverage about increased aggression and behaviour issues in young children.
But nobody is connecting the dots to post-viral brain changes.
Look up PANS/PANDAS. Then think about what we are seeing in schools. https://t.co/Fph0gBKlGx
@CPHO_Canada When will Novavax be approved AND available in Ontario and the rest of Canada? I'm an early years teacher and therefore in a high risk occupation. I need protection. Please let us know so we can make informed decisions about protecting ourselves and our families.
I don’t think many realise just how powerful social conformity is, and how it explains human behaviour. Covid is a great example.
The in some ways misleadingly called ‘desire lines’ - self-generated footpaths - are a great way to see it. /1
Reminder for teachers and parents: A society in which no one is willing to risk being called a troublemaker is a society in which power is certain to be abused.
