Your concern about consequences is understandable. Scripture never teaches that repentance erases earthly outcomes. David was forgiven, yet still lived with the consequences of his sin. Zacchaeus met Christ, but still had to make restitution. Forgiveness does not magically rewrite history.
But Scripture also refuses to let us freeze a person in their worst chapter. God does not deny the reality of someoneโs past, but He does deny that the past has the final word. That's the difference.
A few truths sit side by side:
1. Consequences may remain, but condemnation is not ours to assign. People may still face legal, social, or relational fallout. That's normal. But calling someone "always a whore" is not justice; it's judgment. Christ Himself refused to label the woman caught in adultery by her sin, even though her sin was real.
2. Scripture is brutally honest about people's pasts, and radically hopeful about their future.
Paul was a murderer.
Rahab was a prostitute.
Matthew was a corrupt tax collector.
None of them were defined by what they used to be. Their past was real, but it wasn't their identity.
3. Repentance isn't "bullshit"; it's transformation. Not everyone who claims repentance is sincere. But some are. And when repentance is genuine, Scripture says God makes a person new, not by pretending the past didn't happen, but by giving them a new nature that the past cannot cancel.
4. You're right that society may not forget, but God's people are called to see differently. No one is required to trust someone immediately. No one is required to erase wisdom or boundaries. But we are required to avoid contempt. Christ never excused sin, but He also never mocked the repentant.
5. If God refuses to call someone by their old name, we should be cautious about doing so. You don't have to pretend someone's past didn't happen. But to insist that a person must forever be labeled by their worst choices is to take a position Scripture never gives us.
