APPLEBAUM: Putin has grip on power unlike almost any other leader in the world. He controls enormous economic, political, social, propaganda levers.
At the same time, it's important to remember that there's nothing more fragile than system in which there is no obvious successor.
The funny thing about Putin is that not only do we not know who would replace him, we don't know how that person would be chosen.
There's no Politburo, there's no Soviet Communist Party, there's no internal group that would choose the next leader.
So, you have this weird, precarious situation where you have this strong system that, without him, would suddenly become very chaotic.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the extraordinary outbursts of the President of the United States against female journalists... well, actually against journalists in general and journalism. But it feels like he saves his most childlike behavior and irrational language for female reporters, calling them all kinds of names that kids in kindergarten are given times out for. It’s stunning to me to witness such behavior from any leader, any CEO, any person of influence or importance. I’ve never witnessed someone like this raging, this weekend with @meetthepress host @kwelkernbc, just last week in the Oval Office with @cnn’s @kaitlancollins, calling women stupid or piggy, telling them to “smile”, calling them darling, demeaning their credibility. Every good man should denounce this behavior. Every person should be able to stand up for their colleagues and say “No more.”
Imagine this man screaming like this at your daughter, your wife, your sister, your mother... would you stand for it? No, you wouldn’t! And neither should any of us. It’s unacceptable and undignified. Period. End of story.
‼️BACON: Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities every night with ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles, and we better be there to help them, or in the history books it's gonna say, "United States failed when it's most needed."
“Are we gonna stand with good, or are we gonna stand with evil? That's what this is about tonight. Ukraine is a democracy, it's a free market, it's rule of law. It's been invaded by a dictator who throws his enemies off of roofs, poisons his adversaries, and he attacked his neighbor that's four times smaller than Russia. What's the goal? To eliminate their independence, to eliminate them as a culture, as a people, 'cause he wants to control those old borders of his that he has had. We gotta stand for the good side tonight. What does this bill do? It provides $1.3 billion in direct military aid, and $8 billion in military sales, and provides tough sanctions on Russia. We should have done this a year ago. We could have done this in a bipartisan way year ago, but we have not. This decision is needed now. Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities every night with ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles, and we better be there to help them, or in the history books it's gonna say, "United States failed when it's most needed." And I know this, I want this House to stand on the right side. I want Republicans to stand where Ronald Reagan would be if he was here right now. Ronald Reagan would be voting yes tonight. He'd be standing up for Ukraine and opposing Russia. This is our Churchill moment or our Chamberlain moment, and by God, I'm gonna choose Churchill, and this House better choose Churchill tonight. With that, I yield” - @RepDonBacon on Thursday, June 4th, 2026
“Looks like he (Zelenskyy) had a couple cards to play, 'cause Ukraine is actually winning against Russia” - Rep Adam smith (D-WA-9) - @RepAdamSmith
“And I'll close just by saying one of the other ironies of this, of course, is we have a great example in the world right now of what our strategy should be and where our values should be, and that's Ukraine. And I'm really curious. You know, here we are, we roll out the red carpet for Vladimir Putin. We belittle and insult President Zelenskyy in the White House. He has no cards, right? Well, here we are a year after that. Looks like he had a couple cards to play, 'cause Ukraine is actually winning against Russia. Ukraine, a sovereign democracy standing up against a brutal, oppressive, coercive dictatorship, and we can't even bring ourselves on a consistent basis to say, "We are with Ukraine, and we are against what Putin is doing," and stand up and support them. So I wanna see that strategy to meet the complex threat environment that we have”
The House Armed Services Committee is receiving testimony from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine on the Department of Defense FY27 budget request.
Witkoff meeting Ukrainians: scruffy, unshaven, resentful.
Witkoff meeting putin: positively radiant, bouncing in his seat, making love eyes.
That's definitely how a neutral intermediary looks like.
.@MarkHertling on Trump: “He is rewarding Russia for their aggression…It just doesn't make sense to me why we would be on that side of this equation. It runs counter to everything we are as a nation and our own national values.”

Our Department of Education, which is helmed by a woman connected to a scandal involving child abuse, who was appointed by a man connected to a scandal involving child abuse, is now refusing to recognize the professions of our country’s mandated reporters of… child abuse.
Candles of remembrance will be lit today at 4 p.m. wherever there are Ukrainians. These millions of testaments to memory for the victims of one of history’s gravest crimes will show that Ukrainians have not forgotten and will never forgive Moscow for this genocide.
We all know how and why millions of our people were starved to death and how millions more were never born. And once again we are defending ourselves against Russia—a Russia that has not changed and once again brings death. We must stand united in our defense, just as we are united in preserving our national memory.
Eternal memory to all the victims of the 1932–1933 Holodomor genocide and the mass artificial famines of 1921–1923 and 1946–1947. Today at 4:00 p.m., wherever you are—in Ukraine or abroad—light a candle in your window in remembrance of all the children, women, and men who perished because of this man-made famine.
We defended Ukraine, we defend it now, and we will always defend it. Because this is our only home. And in our home, Russia will never be the master.
The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the representative organization of over 2 million Americans of Ukrainian descent, calls on all branches of the United States government to reject this coercive and abusive framework in its entirety.
Policies that enable or normalize genocide have no place in the public conduct of a democratic nation. Ukraine must receive support toward a just peace that preserves its sovereignty, protects its citizens, and strengthens the security of the transatlantic community.
The people of Central and Eastern Europe were some of the most genuinely pro-American people you can find. The honest sympathy and admiration for the American people you could find here ran deep and spanned across generations.
One common point you will find across our region is that all our grandparents lived their entire lives hoping "the Americans would come" one day. During the darkest days of Russian-imposed communism, people went to lengths you wouldn't believe to get their hands on a pair of jeans, a cassette with American music, or anything that gave them that little piece of America and what it stood for.
We wanted to be like you, dress like you, speak like you, see your movies, listen to your music, build a country like yours, something plenty have paid with their freedom or their life for.
Most of the Central and Eastern Europeans you encounter today on Twitter grew up with those stories from their parent and grandparents. We were also old enough to remember the early 2000s when most of our countries finally joined NATO, after long and painful waiting queues, and finally became American allies.
I don't think I could do justice to the joy and sense of euphoria we all felt then. People got drunk out of joy and hugged each other, took to the streets with flags, danced, sang and smiled, happy and hopeful because the "Americans finally arrived".
Today, less than a year into Trump's presidency, not only did those decades worth of sympathy for a now unrecognizable US evaporated, but made room for feelings that will take generations to amend.
U.S. and Russian officials have reportedly drafted a 28-point peace plan meant to end the war Russia started in Ukraine. In a recent article, Bush Institute Executive Director David J. Kramer writes:
“The United States should not be discussing the future of U.S.-Russian relations while Russian missiles and drones continue to wreak havoc on Ukraine, killing innocent civilians and trying to freeze and force the population into submission with winter coming.
“The 28-point plan should be dropped and replaced with a simple one-point plan: Russia, get out of Ukraine!”

Why a Break With Ukraine Would Be the Biggest Defeat in US History
If Ukraine walks away, the United States loses more than a partner. It loses the foundation of its power. American strength has never been based on weapons alone. What made the US a superpower was that other nations chose to align with it. Influence came from being the centre of a network of democracies that trusted Washington more than any rival.
A rupture with Ukraine would expose how fragile that network has become. Europe has already begun shifting its long term defense spending away from the US. Losing Ukraine would confirm that the United States is no longer the natural leader of the Western alliance. When partners stop depending on Washington, American power stops scaling. Its military remains large, but its reach shrinks.
The economic consequences follow immediately. Once Europe reorganizes its defense market around its own industry, American suppliers lose access to the richest democratic market in the world. Those contracts do not return. Neither does the leverage that comes from being indispensable.
The strategic cost is even clearer. Ukraine has been the most visible test of American commitment since nineteen forty five. If the US cannot hold that line, allies will conclude that Washington’s guarantees are conditional and unpredictable. They will design their own security strategies without the US at the centre. That is how superpowers lose status: partners stop believing, and the world recalculates.
Ukraine will continue fighting for survival. The United States will be left fighting for relevance. And losing that fight is far more damaging than losing any battlefield.
SCOTUS has placed another pause on a lower court order that directed the Trump administration to pay SNAP in full. I’m going to say it again, I’ve never seen a federal government work so hard to starve people.
Beshear: Let me be clear. The president has both the funding and the authority to fund snap during a shutdown. In fact, every other president in every other shutdown has done so. People going hungry in this instance is a choice that this president has made.
A russian flag tie. At the White House. To meet Zelensky. American politicians like Hegseth know exactly what message they’re sending. They don’t hide the fact they are on the Kremlin payroll and completely compromised. They are traitors.
BREAKING: Home Depot has started giving out free training to Americans who want to work in HVAC, carpentry, electricity, & construction.
The classes are self-paced and students will earn certifications they can use on their resumes.
THIS IS AWESOME!
