This historical photograph shows French Impressionist painter Claude Monet standing in his light-filled studio at Giverny, surrounded by enormous canvas panels from his famous Water Lilies series, known in French as Nymphéas. He worked on the series throughout the final decades of his life.

Monet designed these monumental paintings to be displayed in custom oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, creating an immersive environment that would surround viewers with a continuous, tranquil aquatic landscape.

The photograph offers a rare glimpse at the remarkable scale of Monet’s later work while highlighting his lifelong fascination with shifting light, color, and reflections. He continued pursuing these effects even as his eyesight deteriorated in his later years.
