Injustice 3 is unquestionably the next NRS game. I'm not really excited for it. I'm way past the “Evil Superman” and “What if our heroes are BAD oooo” tropes. The story also seems set up for Supergirl and Batman to lead a new Justice League, with Superman emerging from the Phantom Zone alongside other trapped villains for a big battle between heroes and villains. Then Batman and Superman make up to face a bigger threat. Maybe they stay united, maybe not for a sequel. I really hope this isn’t how the story goes, but that’s how it seems, and it sounds boring. DC fans need something fresh and inspiring.
I really disliked the gear system in Injustice 2, where it was basically impossible to make the DC characters look like their comics. It was advertised as having THOUSANDS of different customization items and styles, but in reality it was the same set of 4-5 items for each with countless duplicates or simple pattern changes. Everyone just looked like a robot. Why would I want to play a game where I can’t give Superman a curl or spandex? Why play a Bane that can never be sleeveless? Why grind just to put a hood on Green Arrow? Why can’t Captain Cold put his hood up? Tekken-style customization is the standard, not “How much more can I make Batman look like a robot and never in his classic comic blue and gray look.”
Gameplay needs a hard audit to figure out how to improve it. Most people remember it as a zone-heavy experience or the same format of combo starter + stun + B3 launcher + air combo + combo ender over and over for most characters. Some aren’t like this, but it’s still the “Injustice experience.” It’s just boring. Legacy gameplay might be Injustice’s niche, but after possibly 10 years between sequels, it would be understandable if the gameplay changed.
NRS games in general desperately need a “3rd Mode” that is actually engaging and worthwhile. Mortal Kombat fans have been begging for a returning Konquest mode but instead get a stupid game board mode. Injustice has the chance to break that mold and create a unique experience outside the fighting.
There are other small issues from the first and second games, but those are the big ones.
If Injustice 3 addresses all of these and truly delivers, I’ll gladly purchase and invest time in it. But if it’s only slightly better than Injustice 2, I’ll pass. The franchise is just okay as it stands now. It needs a big jolt of new content for a cool experience.
