🫡 to this Captain.
Being a Captain isn't just about flying the airplane. It’s about taking responsibility for the safety and well-being of your passengers in the air or on the ground, even when it might be someone else’s responsibility. It is actively solving issues when things do not go as planned.
Several years ago, I was a passenger on a 757 from PHX to DFW. We diverted to Midland-Odessa, TX, due to weather. However, Midland Airport lacked gates or airstairs large enough for a 757. We were all stuck on board out on the tarmac. After about 3 hours, the toilets started to overflow, and the soda, water, ice, and snacks ran out. People were getting restless and angry. Hour 5 and still nothing. The Captain finally made a PA and said there was nothing he could do, as he was at the mercy of his dispatch, who was informed of the situation but had no authority to obtain more water or arrange for toilet service. I was in 1st class and had a front row seat to the lack of responsibility the pilots were taking. They sat passively in the cockpit, the door closed, while the flight attendants fought off several attempted mutinies.
Hour Six, I saw a van pull up to the forward galley door. A man jumped up on the roof and banged on the galley door until a flight attendant opened it. They started handing up cases of water and about 20-30 boxes of Domino's pizza. A passenger walked up to the galley, told the flight attendants he ordered it via the FBO, and wanted to make an announcement. They gave him the PA, and he announced that he had ordered food and water, and asked only that everyone make sure women, children, and the elderly were taken care of first. I’ve never heard such loud applause on an airplane before or since. I never forgot what a leader that passenger was that day and how he had stepped up when nobody else did, not even the Captain of the ship or the airline itself. It inspired me to be a better human and to try and remember to look out for others when things go bad or turn chaotic. Be the one who steps up when nobody else does.
