System hasn't changed much apart from going a lot more direct and bypassing midfield. And that's sensible considering our midfield isn't best suited for ball retention in first phase. But there's still a lot to do and for that Amorim needs better players to execute his plans.

4. First phase play - Again, for now we don't have a lot of the desired profiles to play through the phases. But, eventually this needs to improve or teams can easily sit back to defend against us.

@FPLfrasier We should ask for Santos. I also thought with Hojlund leaving, what do you think of Jackson for ST? Has prem experience and suits the system, and we need another option surely next season. Zirkzee is more of a 10 in this system than ST.

@Robin_W_1 Would like this but unlikely. Chelsea don't want to sell him + he wants to stay. Means his valuation would be higher than Garnacho as the player wants to leave only to Chelsea & United need money. Nkunku or Jackson more likely as Chelsea have a similar situation as Garnacho.

@UtdArena Even if we buy, he plays in the 2. We signed Cunha and Mbeumo for the 10 positions in this system + we have Mount and Zirkzee competing. I think Amorim wants Bruno in midfield 2 and doesn't see him as a 10 in this system. His response even suggested the same.

If United don't sign a midfielder this summer, then this summer wouldn't be considered a success. Midfield balance is absent in this team.

United need 2 new midfielders in this team for no. 6 role. They must get one this window and wait for Baleba next summer.

Many have this exact question. So I will try to answer.

Bruno Fernandes played in midfield with a player who doesn’t have the legs to cover the space horizontally or vertically and can’t play more than 60 mins against one of the best teams and midfields in world football yesterday. Result? We dominated the game and dominated possession by a margin. We kept 61% possession and 58% field tilt. The last time we kept 61% or higher possession against a big 6 side in the PL was back in June 2020! Try to understand this stat carefully.

If this isn’t proof enough for you that Bruno can work in the midfield I don’t know what kind of proof you need to change your mind.

Let me go into details.

Is midfield Bruno’s best role? — No
Can he play a midfield role in this set up? — Emphatically yes for me, and I suspect the same for Amorim.

Couple of notes.

Playing in midfield in front of a back 3 is completely different from playing there in front of a back 2/4. People don’t make this distinction while talking about midfield. They are still thinking like we play 442 or 4231. We just don’t.

In the summer, Amorim had a choice. Plan with Bruno at 10 (his best position) and upgrade the midfield, or plan with Bruno in midfield and upgrade the attack. He chose the latter and there are specific reasons behind it.

Bruno is by far our best midfield player. There is no debate in my mind. I suspect it’s the same for Amorim. Bruno can take care of whole progression responsibilities of the whole midfield. Casemiro kind of works if Bruno plays in midfield. Ugarte (well a confident one) may work alongside Bruno. Mainoo just isn’t ready to be a starter in this set up. Without Bruno, we have no midfield. If Bruno was being planned as a 10, we would have signed two midfield players (150-200m spending). With Bruno, we signed one extra no. 10 (65m spending). See the reason Amorim went for Bruno in midfield?

I come back to the original point. You saw what this midfield did while playing with Casemiro who can’t cover ground. Imagine if we sign Baleba and that midfield suddenly becomes absolutely elite. Baleba will have the legs to cover ground left by Bruno.This is the reason Amorim wants Baleba. He is the last piece of the puzzle for him.

@FPLfrasier 100% this. The best performances of Bruno last season in this setup came from midfield and he was one of the best in the league in this position. He can dictate tempo, progress and create.

Give him an elite player alongside like Baleba and we have one of the best midfields.

And, unlike GK market, where I don't see any good options who can replace Onana right now, there are several good options in the market who could do a good job alongside either Bruno or Kobbie.

United must get a midfielder before the end of the window. I think we can still manage this season with Onana. But our midfield balance is just not there.

Ideally we need 2. So, we should have a value option for this season and get a top signing like Baleba next summer.

Midfielder, because, a) games are mostly decided in midfield and our midfield balance is really poor, and b) there aren't many GKs available who start for us right now.

Lammens needs time to adapt. On balance, midfielder gets us more points than we lose if we stick with Onana.

🚨 AMORIM WANTS COMPLETE CULTURE SHIFT

Ruben Amorim has told his squad he doesn’t believe in a fixed “starting XI.” Selection is about dynamics who can start and who can finish.

He wants to end the sulking culture that grew under Ten Hag, when being left out often bred frustration. Instead, Amorim is demanding substitutes see themselves as game-changers, embracing the responsibility of swinging matches when called upon.

ALL players are equally as important in their role.
