With each new towering structure that comes up, each of them cutting trees, digging boreholes and some even emptying their sewage into the river because the system can’t handle the development, we have lost one of the things that make this city unique- its waterways.
We gotta talk about the sewage that flows down Nairobi River every damn day. Yaani we can’t sit in our homes without our noses being assaulted each evening. There are no frogs or birds that nest along the river anymore. It’s practically dead.
Riverbank is embedded with trash. I haven’t heard a frog in years. No crickets. Only bird you’ll see is the hadada. Monkeys, who we would see maybe once every few months, come in droves everyday because there are fewer trees. And forgat sitting outside because THE SEWAGE?!? 🤢🤮
12 years ago, the river was healthy enough that even eagles came to eat from it. Rainy season meant an orchestra of frogs serenaded you to sleep. You could sit outside day and night and hear nothing but birdsong and the sound of the river flowing by. Now?
baba’s video is resurfacing and I just want to say that Omar Sharon and the rest of the UAE- backed RSF criminals were not held accountable for the death of my father & the countless other civilians that were detained.
We found baba’s body in a mass grave along with
Earlier today, the Israeli army stormed Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank, dragging away every Palestinian man they could capture. We have said it from day one: Israel’s war is not only the genocide in Gaza, but also the relentless ethnic cleansing of our people in the West Bank. The same machinery of erasure is at work everywhere.
I can’t in good conscience continue to work for Reuters given their betrayal of journalists in Gaza and culpability in the assassination of 245 our colleagues.
The problem is that our industry is governed by a subservient sense of propriety. Protecting your job, keeping quiet in your newsroom or taking positions in complicit institutions has become more important than upholding the values, ethics and basic practices of the profession. Awards, panels, and prestige matter more than telling the truth, than holding power accountable.
Emirati influencers are upping the ante on Sudan-focussed propaganda as condemnation of the UAE's documented support of the RSF picks up online.
The women's rights angle is dark - the RSF has used sexual violence as a weapon of war against girls as young as 8 years old.

Be intentionally delusional with your duas these last few nights of Ramadan. Nothing is too big or small for Al Kareem (The Most Generous), Al Barr (The Source of All Goodness), Al Mujeeb (The Responsive One). Boundless. Don’t put limits on our Creator’s Mercy.
