People misunderstand why fans “gatekeep” teams like the Knicks.

It’s not about pretending you own a franchise.

It’s about protecting the meaning of loyalty.

There were years when rooting for the Knicks meant signing up for disappointment before the season even started.

You got clowned for wearing the jersey.
You sat through dead-on-arrival seasons, bad management, embarrassing losses, and every joke imaginable.

But people stayed anyway. Not because it was trendy. Because it meant something to them.

That journey matters.

The suffering, the patience, the irrational hope, that’s what built the culture around this Knicks fanbase.

So when people suddenly appear at the finish line after years of silence, acting like they’ve carried the same emotional weight as lifelong fans, of course there’s pushback.

Especially when some people almost roleplay the struggle after skipping the actual struggle.

That’s why fans “gatekeep.”

Not out of insecurity, but because loyalty without sacrifice becomes meaningless.

If there’s no difference between someone who lived through the worst years and someone who arrived once the spotlight got bright, then devotion stops having value.

And to be clear: real fans usually do welcome people who are genuinely becoming interested.

Maybe life got busy. Maybe someone stepped away for personal reasons. Maybe they’re reconnecting with the team after years away. That’s different.

All people ask is respect for the ones who really lived and died with this team when there was nothing glamorous about it.

Respect the history.
Respect the emotional investment.
Respect the people who kept the culture alive before it was cool to be here.
