The "unification" of Germany 🇩🇪 by Prussia is one of the greatest lies in history: it was BRUTALLY ANNEXED trough wars of conquest and then TRANSFORMED by the Prussian system.

Though German lands already possessed a political framework in the German Confederation, the decisive question was what kind of Germany would emerge, and who would dominate it.

Prussia answered those questions with WAR.

In 1864, Prussia and Austria attacked Denmark over Schleswig and Holstein. The victory created precisely the territorial dispute that Bismarck could subsequently exploit against Austria.

Two years later came the decisive rupture.

In 1866, Prussia went to war not merely against Austria but against other German states. Bavaria, Saxony, Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, Württemberg, Baden and others found themselves on the opposing side.

Prussia won in seven weeks. It then did something that the comforting language of ��unification” tends to obscure: it annexed German states outright.

The Kingdom of Hanover disappeared.

The Electorate of Hesse disappeared.

The Duchy of Nassau disappeared.

The Free City of Frankfurt disappeared.

Their rulers were removed, their sovereignty extinguished and their territories incorporated into Prussia.

That is not “unification” in the consensual sense of several states deciding to merge. That is conquest and annexation.

Austria was expelled from German affairs. The old German Confederation was destroyed. In its place Prussia created the North German Confederation, whose constitution institutionalized overwhelming Prussian power. The King of Prussia became its president; Bismarck became its chancellor; Prussian military power formed the backbone of the new system.

Prussia had destroyed the previous German political order and constructed another one around itself.

The southern German states remained outside it for several more years. They were sovereign kingdoms and grand duchies with their own governments, armies and political traditions. Bavaria in particular had a strong sense of separate statehood.

Then came the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

The war created exactly the nationalist emergency in which the remaining southern states could be drawn into the Prussian system. Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden and Hesse-Darmstadt joined the new German Empire through treaties negotiated during the war.

And even then, the symbolism tells you what happened.

The new German emperor was not some neutral German monarch elected above the existing states. He was Wilhelm I, King of Prussia.

The imperial chancellor was Bismarck, the Prussian minister-president.

Prussia contained roughly two-thirds of the empire's territory and population. Its army dominated the imperial military system. Its king automatically possessed the imperial crown. Its political institutions were fused with those of the Reich.

The German Empire was therefore not simply Germany finally discovering its natural political form.

It was a Prussian solution to the German question, imposed after three wars and the destruction of Prussia's German opponents.

This distinction matters because the word “unification” quietly removes the losers from the story.

Hanover did not “unify” with Prussia. It was conquered and annexed.

Frankfurt did not vote itself out of existence. Prussia annexed it.

Hesse-Kassel and Nassau did not voluntarily dissolve themselves into a German nation-state. They lost a war and disappeared.

Austria did not peacefully decide that it was no longer German. Prussia defeated it and expelled it from the German political system.

Even the final empire was created only after another enormous war transformed the political conditions under which the southern states made their choice.

Saying only that “Prussia unified Germany” is rather like describing an acquisition without mentioning the hostile takeover.

Prussia defeated one German order, annexed several German states, excluded Austria, subordinated the remainder to a Prussian constitutional and military framework, and called the result Germany.

But this was only the first part of the problem. Now here's the second.

The older German world had been radically decentralized: kingdoms, duchies, free cities, ecclesiastical territories and regional societies had developed their own institutions and identities over centuries. Authority was dispersed and negotiated.

Prussia brought a very different tradition inherited from the Teutonic order: a powerful monarchy, an unusually strong bureaucracy, a privileged officer corps, military prestige, compulsory service and a state whose administrative capacity was exceptional by German standards. It was nothing but militaristic and administrative. Can you name a single Prussian composer, painter, writer, or artist of any kind? You can't. That's what I thought. BECAUSE THERE WAS NONE.

Prussian military virtues became increasingly identified with German national virtues: discipline, obedience, hierarchy, duty, administrative efficiency, sacrifice and reverence for the army and state. The officer acquired enormous social prestige. Military ceremony entered public life. The Prussian victory of 1870–71 gave this model the ultimate legitimization: it appeared to have created Germany itself.

That is the deeper significance of Prussian "unification": Prussia conquered Germany, built the Reich around its own institutions, and then spent decades teaching Germans to mistake Prussianism for Germanness itself.
