Paulo Wanchope levelled soon after before a Miroslav Klose double either side of the break.
Wanchope scored a second with 17 minutes left to set up a grandstand finish but Torsten Frings sealed the victory with another long-range beauty.
The hosts won their first four games before eliminating Argentina on penalties in the quarterfinals only to go out in the last four to Italy who scored twice late in extra time.
