My husband makes a good living. We are comfortable. Even I am pissed off that my grocery costs have gone up 30% over the last 6 years. We rarely dine out. Pizza night on Fridays and fast food on road trips is just about it, and I tell you what, the $40.98 for 3 burgers, 3 medium fries, and 2 drinks at Whataburger for lunch on the way home from the lake has me ready to pack an ice chest and make picnic lunches again. I cook at home. I shop sales. I buy cheap cuts and make them taste good. So, from the bottom of my heart, fuck all of y’all making light of the $20 burrito. It’s a symbol, and you’d better take note because a dinner plate will change hearts and minds faster than any of your lofty bootstrap ideals.

Gas was $0.85 a gallon. Textbooks weren’t $1,000. The college education we mandate every young person get just to have a shot at an entry level data entry job hadn’t gone up in price by 1,000%. The four roommate situation worked because the rent on your four bedroom house was $800 a month, not $4,000.

Boomers, and half of my generation, Gen X, are completely disconnected from the realities of today’s economy. The economy we allowed, and the incentive structures we permitted through our own negligent voting, are ravaging younger generations.

Anyone my age or older who doesn’t see that is a disconnected old hag.
