But this man is still shamelessly clinging to his chair, and the BJP top leadership is defending him by transferring officers. This is one of the lowest points for the BJP.
Burrabazar (Bara Bazar), Calcutta— c. 1895. Burra Bazar (or Burrabazar) is a sprawling wholesale market in North Kolkata, tracing its roots to the 18th century Sutanuti haat. Originally dominated by local Bengali merchants, it is now a bustling commercial nucleus and one of India’s largest wholesale markets, known globally for textiles, electronic goods, and festive shopping.
Long before British rule, the area was known as Sutanuti Haat, controlled by local indigenous traders like the Setts, Basaks, and wealthy merchants like Shobharam Basak, who supplied yarn to the East India Company.
During the mid-18th century, the market expanded significantly. It became deeply intertwined with the region's opium trade to China. Wealthy Marwari traders settled in the area, financing warehouses and introducing the Hundi (a traditional credit and bill-of-exchange system).
The area wasn't just a commercial hub; it drew diverse communities. For example, it housed one of Kolkata's earliest Jewish settlements and the Armenian community.
Burra Bazar remains the economic backbone of eastern India's wholesale trade. The labyrinth of narrow lanes is packed with specialized sub-markets, such as the Satyanarayan Market, dealing in clothes, jewelry, spices, and hardware.
Despite surviving massive fires and historical upheavals (including a 1756 fire set by Siraj-Ud-Daulah), it has retained its street-hierarchy layout and mercantile legacy as a core pillar of Kolkata's identity. #Kolkata #markets #history @KanchanGupta
@AstroSharmistha@AmitShah Without permission protest are wrong but protest's reason are RIGHT also if govt doesn't care about education system of the country or concerned for Youth Future then don't see a point supporting or advocating for the govt. Any Decent Minister Should have RESIGNED by now, ACT NOW
I really don’t understand what’s the big deal about a minister taking responsibility of an absolute disaster under their administration and resigning!
It happens in mature democracies all over the world! Only in India does it become an ego issue for the party in power.
