The Meaning Behind the Traditional Oil Lamp Dance 🪔🤍

According to Buddhist tradition, after spending three months in Tavatimsa Heaven teaching the Abhidhamma to his mother, the Buddha returned to the human world at the end of the Buddhist Lent. This occasion is commemorated on the full moon day of Thadingyut, also known as Abhidhamma Day.

To welcome and pay homage to the Buddha’s return, Buddhist devotees illuminate their surroundings with lights and offer candles, oil lamps, flowers, and other offerings at pagodas and temples.

Similarly, performing a traditional dance with oil lamps during ceremonies carries deep religious and cultural significance. This dance is not performed in honor of any ordinary individual. Rather, it is a sacred expression of reverence and an offering to welcome and pay homage to the Buddha first. 🙏🏻

Therefore, we hope that everyone will take the time to understand and respect the religious meaning, traditional customs, and cultural values behind this beautiful form of ceremonial worship.

The beauty of a traditional culture lies not only in what we see on the surface, but also in the history, beliefs, and devotion that give it meaning.

GMMTV’s actions make it seem as though Myanmar’s culture is too insignificant to deserve proper credit or respect. Our country may be smaller in the eyes of some people, but that does not make our history, traditions, or cultural heritage any less valuable.

Taking elements of Myanmar’s traditional culture without properly acknowledging their origins is deeply disrespectful. It feels as though pieces of our identity are being taken one by one, as if our cultural heritage does not matter simply because we are a smaller country.

Our culture is not yours to take without recognition. Our heritage is not yours to use without respect.

Myanmar people have supported and appreciated GMMTV, but that support does not mean we should remain silent when our cultural heritage is not properly acknowledged. We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for basic respect, proper research, and clear credit where it is due.

GMMTV, please stop treating Myanmar’s cultural heritage as something that can be overlooked. Acknowledge its origins, respect our identity, and take responsibility. Myanmar deserves recognition, not silence.
