Preserved Edo Period (1603-1868) Neighborhood in Japan.

Narai-juku is a historical post town located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was one of the sixty-nine post towns along the Nakasendo, an ancient road connecting Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603-1868). The town was particularly renowned for its strategic location as the halfway point between the two major cities.

During its prime, Narai-juku flourished as a bustling hub for merchants, samurai, and travelers, providing them with various services, including accommodations, food, and entertainment. The town's prosperity was also fueled by the booming trade along the Nakasendo route.

With the arrival of the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan experienced a period of significant social and political changes. The opening of new transportation routes, such as railways, gradually reduced the importance of the Nakasendo and Narai-juku as a crucial stopover. Consequently, the town's population and economic significance declined.

However, it has since become one of Japan's Nationally Designated Architectural Preservation Sites, so the buildings have been kept much like they originally were in the Edo Period.
